Steamboat Springs ? Ryan Jeep?s third-straight shut out performance helped the American Legion baseball team from Steamboat Springs capture first place in the Mountain League on Sunday.
The team now has earned a top seed for the state tournament, which will take place July 25 to 28 in Breckenridge.
?It was a good Sunday for us,? said Dave Roy, the Steamboat Springs Legion coach. ?Our base running was excellent, and our defense was excellent. I still think we could have hit the ball better, but that?s what we will work on this week.?
Roy said Jeep?s 4-0 shutout victory against Eagle Valley in the first half of a doubleheader Sunday sealed Steamboat?s claim to first place in the Mountain League. The team finished the regular season with a 14-5 record and will be one of the top seeds in the Legion ?B? State tournament, which is for players between ages 14 and 18.
Jeep pitched all seven innings in the first game striking out 12 batters, walking just three and giving up four hits in the contest.
The Steamboat pitcher also had two hits in the game and scored three times. Thomas Kelly also had two hits and knocked in an important RBI that helped seal the victory.
Kelly also highlighted a solid day of defense with an unassisted double play. Steamboat finished the game with no errors.
Eagle Valley used its ace in the second game and took an early lead on Steamboat. However, the local boys battled back into the contest tying the game at eight runs late, and then putting together a rally down the stretch to earn the 12-8 victory.
David Brown, Billy Clark and Jesse Pugh shared pitching duties in the game. Clark came away with the win, and Pugh was credited with the save. As a team, Steamboat had 10 hits and stole four bases. Brown and Channing Conner both had two hits in the game.
The local Legion team now will shift gears and start preparing for several of end-of-the-year tournaments.
The first will take place this weekend in Rangeley. The team then will head to Buena Vista for another tournament before getting a shot at the state tournament at the end of the month in Summit County.

A 10-year study of Chesapeake Bay fishes by researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science provides the first quantitative evidence on a bay-wide scale that low-oxygen "dead zones" are impacting the distribution and abundance of "demersal" fishesthose that live and feed near the Bay bottom.
The affected specieswhich include Atlantic croaker, white perch, spot, striped bass, and summer flounderare a key part of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem and support important commercial and recreational fisheries.
The study, published in the May issue of Marine Ecology Progress Series, was authored by Andre Buchheister, a Ph.D. student in William & Mary's School of Marine Science at VIMS, along with VIMS colleagues Chris Bonzek, Jim Gartland, and Dr. Rob Latour.
All four authors are involved in VIMS' Chesapeake Bay Multi-Species Monitoring and Assessment Program (ChesMMAP), an ongoing effort to track and understand interactions between and among fishes and other marine life within the Bay ecosystem.
Buchheister says "This is the first study to document that chronically low levels of dissolved oxygen in Chesapeake Bay can reduce the number and catch rates of demersal fish species on a large scale." He notes that other studies have looked at the effects of low oxygen on fishes within the water column and on demersal fishes within individual Bay tributaries.
Low-oxygen conditionswhat scientists call "hypoxia"form when excessive loads of nitrogen from fertilizers, sewage, and other sources feed algal blooms in coastal waters. When these algae die and sink, they provide a rich food source for bacteria, which in the act of decomposition take up dissolved oxygen from nearby waters.
In Chesapeake Bay, low-oxygen conditions are most pronounced in mid-summer, and in the deep waters of the Bay's middle reaches. "This appears to displace fish biomass toward the northern and southern edges of the bay's mainstem channel," says Buchheister.
"The drastic decline we saw in species richness, species diversity, and catch rate under low-oxygen conditions is consistent with work from other systems," he adds. "It suggests that demersal fishes begin to avoid an area when levels of dissolved oxygen drop below about 4 milligrams per liter, as they start to suffer physiological stress."
The fishes' response at this level is interesting, says Buchheister, "because it occurs at levels greater than the 2 milligrams per liter that scientists formally use to define hypoxia." Normal coastal waters contain from 7-8 milligrams of oxygen per liter.
Previous research suggests that oxygen-poor waters can stress fish directly, through increased respiration and elevated metabolism, and also by affecting their prey.
"Low levels of dissolved oxygen stress or kill the bottom-dwelling invertebrates that demersal fishes rely on for food," says Buchheister. "Prolonged exposure of these invertebrates to hypoxic conditions in the mid-Bay represents a substantial reduction in the habitat available for foraging by demersal fishes baywide, and could reduce the quality of foraging habitat even after bottom waters become re-oxygenated."
The authors caution, however, that the limits on fish abundance and distribution brought on by low-oxygen conditions are to some degree balanced by the positive effects that nutrients have on production of mid-water and surface-dwelling fishes elsewhere in the Bay. The nutrient-rich waters that encourage dead-zone formation also fuel algal growth, thus turbocharging the base of a food web that ultimately supports fish and other predators.
The team's findings are based on an exhaustive study of the distribution and abundance of late juvenile and adult fishes caught and released in trawl nets during 48 sampling trips between 2002 and 2011, the largest quantitative assessment of the bay-wide demersal fish community ever conducted. The sampling took place at 3,640 ChesMMAP stations throughout the mainstem of Chesapeake Bay.
ChesMMAP, currently funded by Wallop-Breaux funds from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, was established in 2002 as part of the growing international recognition that a single-species approach to fisheries management does not fully account for the complex interactions within marine ecosystems.
Latour, head of the Multispecies Research Group at VIMS, says "The traditional approach to fisheries management looks at a single species as if it were independent, unaffected by other processes and having no effect on other species. In ChesMMAP and our other multispecies research programs we analyze the interactions between species and their environment, including studies of predator-prey dynamics, seasonal changes in distribution, and water-quality parameters such as temperature, salinity, and DO [dissolved oxygen]."
Indeed, the team's research shows that salinity is the most important factor affecting the distribution of Bay fishes, whether they live near the bottom or towards the surface.
"Salinity was the major environmental gradient structuring community composition, biodiversity, and catch rates in our 10-year dataset," says Buchheister. "The saltier waters of the lower Bay and the fresher waters of the upper Bay generally have a more diverse and dynamic fish fauna than the middle Bay, whose brackish waters place physiological demands on many aquatic organisms."
The value of the ChesMMAP dataset extends beyond the current study. "Our work provides a 10-year frame of reference that can be used to evaluate future large-scale changes in the composition, distribution, and abundance of the Bay's demersal fish community," says Latour.
"Continued monitoring will be critical for detecting how the Bay ecosystem responds to continued stresses from fishing, development, and climate change. It's an essential component to a successful management strategy for the marine resources of Chesapeake Bay and the coastal Atlantic."

MOSES LAKE ? The East-West All-State Football Game has been played for nearly 50 years by the best high school seniors in the state. And this year, four of those players hailed from Marysville.
Marysville Getchell?s Zander Seymer and Marysville-Pilchuck?s Kyle Nobach, Iggy Gabov and Jordan Hoorn were chosen from among hundreds of Western Washington players to represent their schools, their communities and the Western Conference at the Summer Classic in Moses Lake on Friday, June 21.
Coached by Lake Stevens? Tom Tri, the players spent the week prior to the game getting acquainted with their teammates, though since more than half of the West?s roster came from Wesco, some introductions weren?t necessary.
?Each area has different kinds of personalities and it was fun to get to know them,? said Seymer. ?Creating new friendships with the other players was great. I?ve played against them for years and you always hear the big names in the paper or just by word of mouth. I knew about some guys that I never had the opportunity to meet, so coming to this game and getting to know them was awesome.?
His fellow Marysville players agreed.
?It was awesome to be there,? said Hoorn. ?We know a bunch of people from around Wesco, so the team was really bonded. We knew each other for a few days, but it felt like we had been a team for a few seasons.?
Gabov agreed that it was nice to put away former rivalries and use skills that would have been intimidating during the regular season to their advantage.
?Actually, it was a great experience because you always hear about other Wesco kids ? which teams have good tight ends or good tackles ? and it was kind of nice to see that we all came together,? he said. ?We?d be like, ?Man, you?re from Stanwood. I heard about you.? And hearing about other kids during school, it was great ? kind of my dream ? to play in an All-State game with them.?
Ultimately, the West team was defeated by the East, with a 38-21 final score.
Nobach, who caught a touchdown pass during the game, said he was happy to spend his last high school competition with players he knew so well.
?I think it was really cool to play with Jordan,? he said. ?I?ve grown up playing football with him my whole entire life. We played together at varsity for three years now, same with Iggy. It really shows that M-P was a pretty big powerhouse this year to be able to send three players for the All-State game.?
All three boys admitted feeling honored that they were chosen for their skill on the field to represent their schools.
?I was so happy, that?s a huge honor,? said Seymer. ?Out of every single person in the west that plays football ? to even be thought of at all is an honor. I am glad I got the opportunity to play in the game.?
Gabov, who moved to the United States from Russia during middle school joined the football team immediately.
?Believe it or not, I was a twig at the beginning of my journey,? he said. ?I had to train myself in the weight room and outside of football, and make myself bigger and get the technique down. Football is an American thing, but the language barrier wasn?t that bad. They just said, ?Iggy go get ?em?, so that?s what I did.?
His strength on the football field will serve him well in the next part of his life, as a member of the United States Marine Corps.
?Honestly, I like football because it challenges me to be great,? he said. ?I was looking for the next challenge. Since I always wanted to do some sort of military service, I chose the Marine Corps because it offered me that challenge ? to bring me to another level. It?s going to help me see other countries and experience different places, and hopefully learn from it.?
Nobach will be competing as a college-level athlete, though not on the football field.
?I?ll be playing baseball at Everett Community College, and I will do all of my pre-requisites to transfer to a four-year university where I can play baseball,? he said.
He may see Seymer there as well, since he is still undecided between attending EvCC for two years before transferring, or going straight to Central Washington University.
?I?m still choosing between Central and EvCC, but I?d be playing football for either one,? he said.
Hoorn will be on the field for Washington State University, but this time it won?t be football.
?I?m planning to go to WSU and play some rugby,? he said. ?I will definitely stay active. I wanted to play rugby because it?s a close translation to football. I was thinking about walking on to the football team, but I need a year off to recoup, I think.?
No matter where their paths take them, the four boys will remember the last game of high school ball that they played, together representing the Marysville community, in Moses Lake.
?I thought it was really cool to watch the level of talent that we had,? said Hoorn. ?It was pretty crazy the level of talent on our team. We had a guy who was 6-foot-8 and 260 pounds. Just the strength in them was cool to watch. It was great to see people I know personally go out and showcase their skills and show everybody what Marysville is all about.?
Seymer was proud to be one of the first Chargers on an All-State roster.
?Without my teammates and coaches at MG, I wouldn?t be where I am,? said Seymer. ?They gave me the opportunity to show my ability to catch a football and make plays. And it?s the same with the M-P kids in the West game. Us being rivals and setting that aside and having fun together ? that was a cool experience I will never forget.?
Gabov gave credit to his school?s coaching staff for all of their hard work to help players like him succeed.
?The M-P coaching staff were really able to help kids find out who they are,? he said. ?I really like how they teach kids the fundamentals and they make sure they don?t forget. When it?s game time, you feel like you?ve been doing it all your life.?
Nobach isn?t surprised that the All-State game included so many Marysville players.
?I would say that Marysville has the best program caring for their kids,? he said. ?They are really close with everybody, they don?t play favorites and they want everyone to get better. My four years playing high school sports was the most memorable thing in my life and I will cherish these moments forever.?

Whales flee from the loud military sonar used by navies to hunt submarines, new research has proven for the first time. The studies provide a missing link in the puzzle that has connected naval exercises around the world to unusual mass strandings of whales and dolphins.
Beaked whales, the most common casualty of the strandings, were shown to be highly sensitive to sonar. But the research also revealed unexpectedly that blue whales, the largest animals on Earth and whose population has plummeted by 95% in the last century, also abandoned feeding and swam rapidly away from sonar noise.
The strong response observed in the beaked whales occurred at noise levels well below those allowed for US navy exercises. ?This result has to be taken into consideration by regulators and those planning naval exercises,? said Stacy DeRuiter, at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who led one of the teams.
