'Rescue Me' singer Fontella Bass dies at 72

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Fontella Bass, whose voice soared in the 1965 hit "Rescue Me," died Wednesday at 72, her family said in a statement.?

"She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren when she was called home," the family said, thanking the singer's famiy, friends and fans for their support.

St. Louis TV station KSDK reports that Bass died of a heart attack.

Bass came from a musical family. Her mother was gospel great Martha Bass, and her brother was R&B and gospel singer David Peaston, who died in February.

"Rescue Me" topped the R&B charts for a month in 1965, reached No.4 on the pop charts, and sold over a million copies. Yet Bass' name was never as famous as that of the tune, as many assumed the song was sung by Aretha Franklin instead. The very first line in Bass' entry in the online AllMusic encyclopedia reads, "The 1965 classic "Rescue Me" is widely regarded as the greatest record Aretha Franklin never made."

Her other hits included "Don't Mess With a Good Thing" and "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)," both with Bobby McClure.

Wrote one fan on the YouTube video for "Rescue Me": "Fontella Bass was one of the greatest soul / rhythm? & blues vocalists of the 60's & 70's. Her voice to this day all these decades later still chills my skin each time I hear her singing. she was one of my generation's most recognized yet often mistaken singers. Rest well, goddess of soul & blues, you'll be deeply missed & remembered always darling."

In 1993, she won a lawsuit against American Express for their use of "Rescue Me" in a 1990 commercial.

She is survived by four children.

Syria chemical attack claims aim to justify foreign interference ... - RT

Accusations that forces backing Syrian President Assad allegedly used chemical weapons against the opposition is a provocation aimed at making an excuse for foreign military intervention, says the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Another goal of such reports is to stir up panic among Syrians and foreigners who remain in the country, the ministry?s spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich told the media on Thursday.

The use of weapon of mass destruction is unacceptable, the diplomat stressed. The Syrian government repeatedly assured Russia, as well as Western partners and the UN that it would not use chemical weapons. Moscow is keeping a close watch on the situation and has no information that the Syrian government plans to use chemical arms.

?We hope that all opposition forces will assume similar obligations and strictly follow these commitments,? Lukashevich pointed out.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the use of chemical weapons ?would be a political suicide? for Assad regime.

?Every time we hear rumors, or pieces of information come to surface that the Syrians are doing something with the chemical weapons we double-check, we triple-check, we go directly to the government and all the time we get very firm assurances that this is not going to be used under any circumstances,? he said in an exclusive interview with RT.

Meanwhile, the Syrian opposition claims the government troops did use chemical warfare in an attack on the city of Homs on Sunday, killing seven people and injuring dozens more with poison gas. A number of videos were posted online showing, opposition activists claim, victims of the alleged chemical attack.

Syria's Ambassador to Moscow Riyad Haddad denied the report saying that the information ?was absolutely wrong.?

"Naturally, it was a provocation and a part of plans to put psychological pressure on the government in Syria," he told Interfax. According to the diplomat, it is all done to make a pretext for a foreign intervention into the Arab Republic. He expressed hope though that thanks to Russian and Chinese efforts it will not happen.

Permanent members of the UN Security Council, Moscow and Beijing stand for a political solution to the Syrian crisis.

?The only path to put an end to the sufferings of Syrian people lies through a dialogue and talks,? Lukashevich reiterated on Thursday. On the whole, the situation in Syria is extremely complicated and ?is following the most unfavorable scenario." Responsibility for continuing the bloodshed in the republic is laid with those who incite further fratricidal war in Syria, the Russian diplomat pointed out.

Etisalat Advocates Broadband Development in Nigeria

Home ? News ? Etisalat Advocates Broadband Development in Nigeria

Ibrahim Dikko, Director, Regulatory Affairs,Etisalat Nigeria

Nigeria?s most innovative and fastest growing telecommunications company, Etisalat Nigeria, has thrown its weight behind one of the nation?s first campaigns for increased broadband awareness, access and development through its sponsorship of the BusinessDay Broadband Summit 2012. The summit which was organised in conjunction with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and endorsed by the Ministry of Communication Technology, took place at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Lekki, in Lagos.

The Summit which had the theme: ?Opportunities in Nigeria?s Emerging National Broadband Policy,? focused on how the Nigerian government and investors could leverage on broadband for economic and business development, especially in e-commerce and local content, while increasing citizens? access and empowerment.

Speaking on the topic, ?Investing in Broadband Infrastructures in Nigeria: The Experience of a Foreign Investor?, Director Regulatory Affairs, Etisalat Nigeria, Ibrahim Dikko, expressed concern that despite the investment of four major operators in high-capacity fibre-optic cable, pricing still presents an obstacle to rapid growth because of inland transmission cost. ?With? transmission cost of data from Lagos to Abuja being over ten times higher than Lagos to London, the impact of broadband is currently not felt in Nigeria,? he said.

Dikko emphasised the importance of a nationwide inland transmission network to facilitate broadband growth in the economy. ?The capacity provided by the subsea cables is mostly concentrated along the shores of the country. To fully realize the benefits of the subsea cables, concerted effort has to be made to provide infrastructure that will make the capacity available inland?, he stated.

According to him, ?Research shows that broadband is key to the development of African economies creating positive social, micro-economic and macro-economic impacts. The social impact makes possible an improvement in social links, creation of social capital and empowerment. The micro-economic impacts include improved market information flow,? increase in business productivity and job creation. At the macro-economic level, it boosts GDP.?

He suggested that to achieve the broadband target in Nigeria, the government should release low frequency mobile spectrum using innovative auction methods that focus on deployment and not necessarily revenue generation, address multiple taxation and expedites approval of permits and Rights of Way. Subsidies for rural infrastructure to stimulate the fast deployment of infrastructure to the more rural areas will help and the development of local content development is key to stimulating the use of broadband internet.

Dikko concluded by stating that Etisalat Nigeria is enabling broadband penetration through its investments in its 3.75G network and data services. ?we will continue to roll out services to enable businesses become more productive, students more informed and citizens become more engaged,? he said.

Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, spoke in the same vein. According to her, availability of spectrum was an important part of delivering wireless broadband. She revealed that the ministry was actively pursuing the conversion from analogue to digital and hoped to complete the process by 2015, in order to free up critical spectrum resource within the 460 ? 790 MHz frequency band.

?Network service providers are an important part of our supply side of the equation for broadband. Without them, other resources are not useful, therefore they are the most important resource from a policy perspective in a liberalized environment. Today, broadband is no longer viewed as a luxury but a necessity,? she said.

The minister said in the next decade, it would be doubtful any nation would be able to effectively compete globally without availability of broadband infrastructure and services for its citizens and businesses. ?The speed of broadband service is bringing about innovations that were impossible at narrow and medium band speeds. Nigeria?s path to a broadband policy takes into cognizance our local realities and context. Broadband connectivity for accelerated communication is now a sine qua non for any country that wants to remain globally competitive,? she said.

She stated that after the approval of the National ICT Policy, President Goodluck Jonathan set up a Committee on the National Broadband Strategy and Roadmap.? The committee is charged with the responsibility to chart solid action plans and strategies for achieving universal broadband infrastructure, services and usage in Nigeria for national development and benefit.

Speaking also at the Summit, the Director, Public Affairs of the NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo said the impact of broadband on the nation?s GDP could be translated into growth in business and economy. ?This is why every country is working hard to increase broadband. Nigeria is not an exception. Telecoms services in the country are some of the most efficient today. Telecoms has become an indispensable tool among Nigerians. We want to get it right,? he said.
