The one person in Cairns ?who knows the full history of the Cairns Entertainment Precinct is Ian Lowth the General Manager of Community Servicies,he has authored the last four reports that went to Council?and each one has changed. He could explain how badly the?decision?making has been handled by the?Councillors? who have no interest in what the Community wants but building a monument to themselves,Councillors should have voted on his first recomondation when they were first elected,we would be opening a new ?Regional Performing Arts ?Centre?today and provided jobs during the GFC.VAL WOULD HAVE BE REELECTED AND SO WOULD THE COUNCILLORS.
The Cairns Convention Centre would be booking?CONFERENCES??and creating long term jobs
PROPOSED CAIRNS REGIONAL PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE
Ian Lowth : 26/7/18-02: #1702318v1
RECOMMENDATION:22may08_saccs_cl1523Oct08_saccs_cl19
That Council endorse the previous Cairns City Council adopted position and
progress with planning and sourcing of funds to construct a Regional Performing
Arts Centre and off-street carpark on the Council-owned site at the corner of
Sheridan and Hartley Streets in the Cairns CBD.
OPTIONS:
1. Endorse the previous Cairns City Council adopted position and progress with
planning and sourcing of funds; or
2. Place on hold the plans for the Sheridan and Hartley Street site and initiate a
comparative study of this option and the two alternatives to be presented by Arts
Nexus; or
3. Abandon plans for the development of a new facility and investigate options for a
significant upgrade of the existing Civic Theatre; or
4. Not proceed with plans for either a new Regional Performing Arts Centre or a
significant upgrade of the existing facility.
CONCLUSION:
It is recommended that Council approve Option 1 as listed above.
How you can go from $80 million to $240 million then back to $150 million makes a complete joke of the whole process
The Cairns Entertainment Precinct will be scaled back to $150 million and the proposed museum scrapped to minimise the impact on ratepayers and help sell the project to the State Government.
In an extraordinary turnaround from the original $240 million scope of the project, the council is backing a cheaper option to allay concerns about the cost.
