Channel Your Inner ?Rock Jock? | Lifecrowd

?
If TV commercials are a true sign of the times, at least half of you go rock climbing on weekends. Whatever the media?s pitching ? whether it?s soft drinks, deodorant, or SUVs ? ad pitchmen seem to see this extreme sport as the perfect way to connect their products with hip free spirits. Movies have also glamourized rock climbing, with more and more characters seen scaling indoor rock walls or big rocks out in nature; and everywhere we look, there?s a new indoor rock climbing gym opening. (What?s next? A message showing a politician as a rock-climbing adventurer? Now that I?ve said that, we?ll undoubtedly see one.)

width=For you curiosity seekers who have yet to delve into this popular sport, there?s quite a bit of variety to it.

1. In traditional climbing, climbers wear harnesses and are connected by a rope. As they scale a rock face, they place wedges and nuts into cracks in the rock so if they fall, the rope catches them. (Ropes are good; escaping death is?priceless.)

2. Sport climbing involves high intensity climbing using fixed anchors on relatively short routes.

3. Much like sport climbing, indoor climbing involves using handholds and footholds to scale a plywood or concrete wall.

4. Free climbing uses no ropes or harnesses. Talk about extreme!

5. Instead of climbing up a relatively flat rock face, bouldering involves climbing up (you guessed it) large, natural boulders or artificial boulders in gyms, and typically doesn?t use ropes. Bouldering can also be practiced on buildings (aka ?buildering?).

6. Ice climbing is similar to traditional climbing except that you?re scaling an ice formation instead of a rock. It also uses specialized equipment that can screw into the ice instead of the traditional wedges and nuts.

width=There?s a bit more to rock climbing than strapping on a pair of tennis shoes, grabbing some rope from your garage, and just going for it. There?s special gear that includes climbing shoes, a belay device (for limiting the distance of a possible fall), a climbing harness, gloves or hand chalk (for hand-drying while you?re climbing), a chalk bag, a crash pad (for bouldering), quickdraws (to reduce rope drag), and a helmet (unless you?re the more adventurous type).

In addition to being great for selling stuff on commercials and making actors look cool, rock climbing has lots of benefits, like improved muscle strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and focus. Even with the risk, it looks like fun and definitely appeals to the competitor in most of us. To learn more, book a rock climbing session, where you?ll learn safety precautions as well as helpful hand and foot techniques.

This goes to show that keeping your feet on the ground is highly overrated.

Pakistani PM deflects US pressure over militants (AP)

ISLAMABAD ? U.S. pressure on Pakistan to attack Afghan militants on its soil will not succeed, the Pakistani prime minister told a gathering Thursday of political and military leaders trying to formulate a response to fresh American allegations that the army's spy agency is supporting the insurgents.

The claims last week by Adm. Mike Mullen, America's top military officer, sent relations between Islamabad and Washington plummeting and triggered a nationalist, anti-American backlash across Pakistan.

Much of the focus has been on veiled U.S. threats of unilateral action against Afghan militants sheltering on the Pakistan side of the border.

"Pakistan cannot be pressured to do more, but the doors are still open from our side for talks and discussion," said Prime Minister Yousuf Reza Gilani. "We reject these allegations. God willing, we can face these challenges with unity. We are committed to defend our independence and sovereignty."

Intelligence chief Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha was also scheduled to address the gathering, which was closed to the media, apart from Gilani's opening remarks.

U.S. officials have long talked with Islamabad about links between Pakistan and the militant Haqqani network that is behind much of the violence in Afghanistan. But those discussions were mostly held in private, in the hope that Pakistan could gradually be persuaded to sever the purported ties with the group.

But Mullen seemed to signal a new approach last Friday when he told Congress that that Haqqani network was a "veritable arm" of the spy agency, which he said supported the militants in a recent attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul.

Pakistani officials have denied the allegations, and accused Washington of making them a scapegoat for U.S. failures in Afghanistan.

Most of Pakistan's feuding political party leaders were present at Thursday's meeting, a sign of how U.S. threats can unite them. The attendants are expected to issue a resolution condemning the United States but it's unclear whether the statement will touch on the allegations of Pakistan support for Afghan militants, a far more sensitive topic because it could set off criticism of the powerful army.

The army, not the elected government, controls Afghan policy and will ultimately decide the future course of action on the issue.

Most analysts say the Pakistani army and the spy agency are tolerating or even supporting the Haqqani network because they want to cultivate it as an ally in Afghanistan once the Americans withdraw. They see little chance of the top brass attacking the group now, especially when the U.S. is calling for peace talks with other militant factions in Afghanistan.

This view has support in Pakistan, where many people perceive the Americans as the illegitimate force in Afghanistan, not the Afghan Taliban. But others oppose it because the militants are ideologically allied to al-Qaida and other extremists who have carried out scores of bombings on Pakistani soil over the last four years.

Musical weather shows climate influence

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? Scientists at the Universities of Oxford and Reading have catalogued and analysed depictions of weather in classical music from the 17th Century to the present day to help understand how climate affects how people think.

Dr Karen Aplin, of Oxford University's Department of Physics, and Dr Paul Williams, from Reading University's Meteorology Department, both combine careers as atmospheric scientists with a love of classical music. Dr Aplin was inspired by the regular portrayal of weather-related phenomena in orchestral music she has played, she said: 'as all music lovers know, the hint of a distant storm from a drum roll can be just as evocative as the skies depicted by Constable and Monet.'

The researchers were so convinced that classical music is influenced by climate that they pursued this pilot study in their own spare time, outside of their normal scientific work. A report of their study is published on 23 September in the journal Weather.

Dr Williams said: 'We found that composers are generally influenced by their own environment in the type of weather they choose to represent. As befits the national stereotype, British composers seem disproportionately keen to depict the UK's variable weather patterns and stormy coastline.'

The research showed British composers easily lead the way with musical weather, followed by the French and the Germans.

Generally, the most popular type of weather represented in music is the storm, presumably because of the use of storms by composers as an allegory for emotional turbulence, such as in Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes from the opera Peter Grimes.

Wind was found to be the second most popular type of weather to feature in music. Wind can have a variety of characters, from a gentle breeze rustling the trees, as in the beginning of the third movement of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, to a full-blown Antarctic gale, as in Sinfonia Antarctica by Vaughan Williams.

The research also charts the development of musical instruments as aids to evoke a particular sound, for example a thunder sheet or wind machine, and the effect weather had on composers.

Strauss needed both sunshine and the Alpine landscape to inspire him. Several other composers, such as Berlioz, Schubert and Wagner, were also dependent on fair weather conditions, associated with high pressure, for their best output. Wagner, for example, referred to 'bad-weather unemployment' and wrote: 'This is awful weather. My work has been put aside for two days, and the brain is stubbornly declining its services.'

The study provides a baseline of cultural responses to weather before climate change. It seems inevitable that our changing climate will influence artistic expression: will UK composers writing music for a 2050 Proms programme still be interested in representing our warmer, wetter weather? The team believe their research will provide a basis for comparison.

'Meteorological phenomena in Western classical orchestral music', by Karen Aplin and Paul Williams, is published in the journal Weather on 23 September 2011.

Cain responds to Freeman's Tea Party talk

Let the presidential debates begin.

After Morgan Freeman criticized the Tea Party and called their actions "racist," Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is firing back ... with compliments!

Story: Morgan Freeman: Tea Party 'a racist thing'

OK, not just compliments, but Cain did take a moment during his defense of the Tea Party to call Freeman "a great actor."

That out of the way, what else did Cain have to say about Freeman and his criticisms?

MORE: Morgan Freeman Calls Out Tea Party as "Racist"

In case you need a refresher, the Oscar-winning actor appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight on Friday and called the Tea Party "a racist thing" for attempting to boot President Barack Obama from office.

"Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term," Freeman said. "What underlines that? 'Screw the country. We're going to whatever we can to get this black man outta here.'"

Story: Morgan Freeman is Hollywood's wise man

Cain made an appearance on Fox's Your World with Neil Cavuto, where he addressed Freeman's remarks.

"Well, first of all, I doubt if Morgan Freeman, with all due respect, who is a great actor, has ever been to a Tea Party," Cain said. "Most of the people that are criticizing the Tea Parties ... about having a racist element, they have never been to a Tea Party."

When Cavuto attempted to make a joke about Freeman having presidential experience (during his meteor-plagued "Deep Impact" administration), Cain said, "In a movie! This is real life out here on the campaign journey, man. This is not a movie."

Cain, whose campaign is riding high after winning the Florida straw poll, was quick to say that he was not offended by the actor's remarks.

"I just think that it is sad that they're so short-sighted in really understanding what the whole Tea Party citizen movement is all about," he continued. "I'm not offended by it, because it doesn't slow down my momentum. It doesn't slow down the reaction that I get from people.

PHOTOS: Hollywood Gets Political

"So, name-calling is something that's going to continue in this, because they don't know how to stop this movement. And this movement is making a big difference in politics, because a lot of the traditional Democrats are moving to the center or moving over to vote for conservatives. They're taking another look at a Herman Cain."

Your move, Freeman. Your move.

Rising Cain (Politico)

It?s a good time to be Herman Cain.

The former Godfather?s Pizza CEO has been on a roll in the days since his surprise straw poll win at Florida?s Presidency 5 conference over the weekend, racking up more media attention, new support and fundraising than he?s had for months.

Cain on straw poll victory

Cain isn?t seen as any more likely a nominee after the straw poll than he was going into it. Though he won decisively, the results are largely seen as more significant because of Rick Perry?s distant second-place finish after a strong push to win. Cain?s still trailing in the polls ? the most recent, released Monday by CNN and ORC International, shows Cain with 7 percent support, behind Perry, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich and tied with Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Sarah Palin. But Cain?s been riding a boost of momentum that?s revitalized a campaign that had stalled in recent weeks.

Now the trick is keeping it up.

There won?t be a debate for a week, taking the presidential campaign out of the news just at the moment when he?s getting his time in the spotlight again. On top of that, Cain?s still recovering from the flu, and he?s about to set out on a long-scheduled national book tour that will take him out of daily campaigning.

In the meantime, he?s basking in the attention ? he even got a surprise endorsement from comedian and conservative talk show host Dennis Miller, who said he was ?over the moon? when he heard Cain won.

?This guy?s the one who makes sense to me. He?s a sweet man. He?s not self-aggrandizing,? Miller said on his show.

Cain spokeswoman Ellen Carmichael said the campaign hadn?t known in advance that Miller planned to endorse Cain or offer to host a Los Angeles fundraiser for the businessman, but that?s what the past few days have been like.

?It?s been a hell of a ride this far,? Carmichael said.

Carmichael said it?s the latest in good fundraising news for the campaign, which she said has been raising ?several hundred thousand a day? since Saturday.

Record traffic crashed the campaign?s website several times, and the media requests have been flowing in steadily. On Monday alone, Cain was on NBC?s ?Today? show and three different Fox News programs, along with at least five radio shows. Later this week, he?ll add CNN?s ?The Situation Room? and NBC?s ?Tonight Show? to the list.

Understand Contracts And Legal Deals Governed By Commercial And Corporate Laws Through The Help Of Law Firms In South Africa

Article by Jim Cherry

The different categories of the law that governing the Republic of South Africa can be difficult to understand even with the South African nationals. Only those who are familiar with the law can understand all the governing bodies that guide South Africa to what it is today. Anyone who has troubles with the law or has significant negotiations or transactions that must be legal, should seek consultations in law firms to avoid any problem. When it comes to the business sector and some common aspects in South Africa, there are two kinds of laws that governing it. There is a commercial law and the corporate law. The commercial law has a broad coverage because its legislation can cover any transaction in public. Its coverage can range from marriage contracts to the protection of individual properties.

While the corporate law is weighing mostly to the side of giant businesses, and concentrating mainly on the complexity of corporate governance, insolvencies, acquisitions, finance and the continuous cycle of mergers. It focuses mainly and only on the business aspects. While commercial law can be interchanged with the corporate law. If there are couples who are going to get married, acquire a housing or car loan, or finding priceless minerals in a property, they will have to seek advices from law firms in South Africa, which had lawyers that specialize with the commercial law?s set legislation. The commercial law and corporate law can be interchangeable, but the commercial law has greater coverage aside from the business sides. The republic of South Africa has several acts, which promulgated from the previous years, for the governance of commercial and corporate laws.

South African nationals should not embark on any contract or deal without contacting law firms or reputable attorney of law. Acquiring the services of any lawyer will guarantee that the deal will be fair and legal and favors to the respected person that deserves it. Any law firms in South Africa can provide legal advices, and proper actions of any South African national in different legal issues such as carriage and sale of goods, administration of estates, acquisition of any real estate property, options for outward or inward investments, taxes for both corporate and individuals, and insurances for accident, marine, fire and life. The differentiation of commercial law and corporate law can still confuse the South African citizens. However, people should only remember that the commercial law governed their individual legal needs, while corporate law can only cover significant issues in the business world.

This Stock Is at the Top of Its Industry (The Motley Fool)

Disclaimer: My favorite news source is The Financial Times, which is owned by Pearson (NYSE: PSO - News), the subject of this article. Having confessed my potential conflict of interest, I can now, with clear conscience, set about telling you why Pearson is a publishing company that's keeping up with the digital age, and a company worth keeping your eye on.

Tom Clancy approved
Pearson is an international media and education powerhouse and publishes in the education, business, and consumer markets. If you've ever read Tom Clancy, Nora Roberts, John Steinbeck, or a host of other well-known authors, you've read a Penguin book. Penguin is a Pearson holding.

But 68% of Pearson's sales come from the education side of the business, and the company's revenue in that space is the highest in its peer group, a space that includes industry stalwarts McGraw-Hill (NYSE: MHP - News) and Apollo Group (Nasdaq: APOL - News).

Not your father's publishing company
Second-half results for 2011 paint a growing and profitable picture for Pearson:

  • Total sales are up a healthy 6%.
  • Total profits were up a more-than-healthy 20%.
  • FT Group sales, which operates Pearson's business publications, are up 7%, with profits up 10%.

Penguin's sales are 4% lower, but profits have stayed steady because of rapid digital growth. Dame Marjorie Scardino, Pearson's chief executive, recently told The Financial Times that the company was "well placed to exploit accelerating structural changes in its industries, such as the move to digital delivery of content." Walking the digital talk:

  • Pearson's digital education platform and service registrations are up 15%.
  • FT.com subscriptions are up more than 30%, which is extra impressive considering there's a pay wall.
  • Penguin e-book revenue is up almost 130%.

And developing markets -- including Africa, Middle East, Asia, and Latin America -- are another bright spot for Pearson, with total sales for all areas up 40%.

There's nothing to fear but un-Foolish fears
Pearson is currently trading for slightly less than $18, with a very attractive P/E of just 7.3. Peer Scholastic (Nasdaq: SCHL - News) has a P/E right now of 23. John Wiley & Sons' (NYSE: JW-A - News) is 15.

Investors have steered clear of traditional publishing companies lately, fearing they weren't making the necessary adjustments to stay competitive in the digital age. Pearson is not one of these companies. It's forward-thinking, forward-moving, and worthy of a closer look by the investment community.

NASA: 6-ton satellite hits Earth; location unknown (AP)

WASHINGTON ? NASA's dead 6-ton satellite plunged to Earth early Saturday, but more than eight hours later, U.S. space officials didn't know just where it hit. They thought the fiery fall was largely over water and the debris probably hurt no one.

The agency did not give a more specific location in a midday update on its website, which also said officials were not aware of any reports of injuries or property damage. Most of the spacecraft was believed to have burned up.

The bus-sized satellite first penetrated Earth's atmosphere somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA and the U.S. Air Force's Joint Space Operations Center. But that doesn't necessarily mean it all fell into the sea.

NASA's earlier calculations had predicted that the 20-year-old former climate research satellite would fall over a 500-mile swath and could include land.

Because the plummet began over the ocean and given the lack of any reports of people being hit, that "gives us a good feeling that no one was hurt," but officials didn't know for certain, NASA spokesman Steve Cole told The Associated Press.

The two government agencies said the 35-foot satellite fell sometime between 11:23 p.m. EDT Friday and 1:09 a.m. EDT Saturday, but with no precise time or location.

There was rampant speculation on the Internet and Twitter, much of it focusing on unconfirmed reports and even video of debris from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite over Alberta, Canada.

Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said the spacecraft entered the atmosphere around 12:15 a.m. EDT over the coast of Washington. He said much of the debris likely fell over the Pacific Ocean, though its trajectory suggests some of it could have fallen over more heavily populated areas in the U.S. and Canada, including Portland, Ore.; Seattle; Calgary, Alberta; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

"Pieces are falling off of this flaming fire ball, and some of it has enough momentum to go hundreds of miles," he said.

Cole said that was possible because the last track for the satellite included Canada, starting north of Seattle and then in a large arc north then south. From there, the track continued through the Atlantic south toward Africa, but it was unlikely the satellite got that far if it started falling over the Pacific.

Cole said NASA was hoping for more details from the Air Force, which was responsible for tracking debris.

But given where the satellite may have fallen, officials may never quite know precisely.

"Most space debris is in the ocean. It'll be hard to confirm," Cole said.

Some 26 pieces of the satellite representing 1,200 pounds of heavy metal had been expected to rain down somewhere. The biggest surviving chunk should be no more than 300 pounds.

UARS is the biggest NASA spacecraft to crash back to Earth, uncontrolled, since the post-Apollo 75-ton Skylab space station and the more than 10-ton Pegasus 2 satellite, both in 1979.

Russia's 135-ton Mir space station slammed through the atmosphere in 2001, but it was a controlled dive into the Pacific.

Before UARS fell, no one had ever been hit by falling space junk and NASA expected that not to change.

NASA put the chances that somebody somewhere on Earth would get hurt at 1-in-3,200. But any one person's odds of being struck were estimated at 1-in-22 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

The satellite ran out of fuel and died in 2005. UARS was built and launched before NASA and other nations started new programs that prevent this type of uncontrolled crashes of satellite.

How To Make The Most Of Your Computer Hardware | Technology ...

How To Make The Most Of Your Computer Hardware

Once you have unpacked your Personal Computer and set up the different hardware elements, it?s worth taking the time to get to know exactly what each part does. All personal computers have the same basic elements. Knowing how they fit together and operate as a unit, and understanding where you fit into the picture will help you and your family to get the most out of home computing.

Your computer is simply a tool that, given the correct instructions and data, will make your day to day life easier and more enjoyable. You enter instructions and information into the computer via the mouse and keyboard. The results can be seen on your monitor?s screen and printed out on your printer.

The most important part of the computer, the system unit, links all these elements together. Whatever make of computer you have, it will have these same key components that allow you to use it. Although most computers look similar, there are variations between models, so always check instructions in the computer manual to make sure you?re using your computer correctly. Here is how you can get the most out of your PC by understanding the purpose of each part:

- Monitor. Your monitor is home to the computer screen, which shows you what your computer is doing. The screen comes in different sizes and, in the interest of preventing eyestrain, the bigger the better. Screens are measured in inches, diagonally. A 15 inch screen or larger is the ideal choice. Your monitor do have their own power switch.

- Mouse. Your mouse is use to select items on screen and move the text cursor. A text cursor is a flashing line that identifies where new text appears. Basically you move the mouse around with your hand and a mouse pointer moves around on the screen, allowing you to select menus and click on commands.

- Keyboard. You use the keyboard for typing in data and commands and has the familiar typewriter keys. On the right is a separate numeric keypad, plus navigation keys with arrows that help you to move around the screen. There is also a series of function keys along the top that allow you to give special commands.

- Printer. You need a printer to put your work on paper. The two main types are laser and inkjet. Laser printers produce better quality print-outs and have the fastest printing speeds. However, they tend to be more expensive, especially color models. Inkjet printers are cheaper and most can print in color. Unless you are printing hundreds of pages a week, an inkjet printer will almost certainly meet you needs.

- The system unit. This is where all the cables plug in. Whether your system unit is on its side like a desktop unit or its end like a tower unit, it acts in the same way. The system unit also contains disk drives like a floppy disk drive and a CD Rom drive.

In summary, your hardware is the actual body of the computer system, comprising the system unit and all the elements that you can plug into it. It also determines which type of operating system you can use.

UK to pay victims over 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre (AP)

DUBLIN ? Britain said Thursday it will offer compensation payments to the families of people killed and wounded on Bloody Sunday, a nearly 40-year-old massacre by British paratroopers in Northern Ireland that fueled Irish Catholic support for the IRA.

Thirteen people were killed and 14 wounded on Jan. 30, 1972, in Londonderry when the soldiers opened fire on a Catholic crowd demonstrating against Britain's detention without trial of Irish Republican Army suspects. Britain compounded local fury by hastily ruling that the soldiers, none of whom were wounded, were responding to IRA attacks and targeting gunmen.

Last year, Prime Minister David Cameron apologized after a 12-year investigation found that the soldiers were not under attack and fired without justification on unarmed civilians, many of whom were fleeing or aiding wounded.

Britain's Defense Ministry confirmed Thursday it has written to lawyers representing the Londonderry victims' families seeking terms for financial payments. It offered no details of potential payouts.

"We acknowledge the pain felt by these families for nearly 40 years, and that members of the armed forces acted wrongly. For that, the government is deeply sorry," the ministry said in a statement.

Peter Madden, a Belfast lawyer who represents many of the victims' families, said negotiations would open soon with the British government to put a price both on the lives lost and maimed and on the damage caused to victims' reputations by the British Army's "shameful allegations" that they were armed IRA members.

But some families immediately rejected any offer of financial compensation, stressing they want criminal prosecutions of those who opened fire. Nobody has ever been charged over the 13 killings.

"It is repulsive. Offensive. Not now, nor at any time will I accept money," said Linda Nash, whose 19-year-old brother William was shot fatally through the chest. "I've already told my legal team I want to go forward with prosecutions."

Nash noted that Britain in the early 1970s had offered her mother a cursory compensation payment of 250 pounds, about $625 at the time. "She didn't take it then and I will be doing the same," she said.

Madden said most families involved received "derisory and wholly inappropriate" payments from Britain in 1974, but that would have no bearing on the upcoming negotiations.

The Bloody Sunday Inquiry, authorized by former Prime Minister Tony Blair in the immediate build-up to the Good Friday peace accord of 1998, was empowered to find the truth behind the British Army's worst act of violence in Northern Ireland. Families of the dead had demanded such a probe for decades.

The investigation led by English judge Lord Saville produced a 5,000-page report based on evidence from 921 witnesses, 2,500 written statements and 60 volumes of written evidence. It cost nearly 200 million pounds ($300 million).

Saville gave the ex-paratroopers, now in their 60s and 70s, broad protections from criminal charges as well as anonymity in the witness box, citing the risk that IRA dissidents might target them in retaliation.

However legal experts say wiggle room remains for prosecutions and, more likely, civil lawsuits against the retired soldiers, particularly those who were found to have lied during their testimony.

Abbas presses Palestinian UN bid, despite warnings

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is pressing ahead Tuesday with his diplomatic campaign to gain full U.N. membership, brushing aside heated Israeli objections and a promised U.S. veto as the issue of Palestinian statehood takes center stage with world leaders gathering for the opening of the U.N. General Assembly session.

Abbas had meetings scheduled Tuesday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, among leaders, as he sought to line up support ahead of his speech Friday to the General Assembly when the Palestinians vow to submit a letter formally requesting U.N. membership.

Envoys of the Quartet of Mideast mediators ? the U.S., the U.N., the European Union and Russia ? planned to meet again Tuesday in an effort to avert a divisive showdown over Palestinian statehood by crafting a way forward that would be enough to persuade the Palestinians to drop their bid and have enough caveats for Israel to get its support.

As the Palestinians edged closer to seeking statehood recognition from the United Nations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Abbas to meet with him in New York. The Israel leader said he wanted to resume peace talks, upping the pressure on Abbas and building on the frenzied diplomacy swirling around the Palestinians' bid.

Regardless, Abbas said he had not been swayed by what he called "tremendous pressure" to drop the bid for U.N. recognition and instead to resume peace talks with Israel. Senior aides to the Palestinian leader said Abbas was undaunted by threats of punitive measures.

Story: Abbas presses Palestinian UN bid, despite warnings "Abbas says to every one: it's enough, 20 years of negotiations are more than enough, the world should intervene and end the Israeli
occupation as long as the USA. can't," said Mohammed Ishtayeh, an Abbas aide.

Clinton calls for talks
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said, however, there was still time to find a solution to the diplomatic crisis.

Clinton told reporters in New York that the U.S. is talking with all sides to defuse the standoff, noting that there were still several days to seek a compromise before Abbas' speech.

She joined Netanyahu in calling for new talks and repeated the U.S. position that the only path to a separate state for Palestinians is through negotiations with Israel.

Palestinians face US counteroffensive on UN vote

Nabil Shaath, senior aide to Abbas, told The Associated Press that the Palestinian leader informed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during their meeting Monday that he would present him with a letter requesting full membership on Friday, ahead of Abbas' speech to the General Assembly.

Any candidate for U.N. membership must submit a letter to the secretary-general stating it is a "peace-loving" state and accepts the U.N. Charter. Ban is expected to examine the Palestinian letter and then send it to the 15-member U.N. Security Council which must give its approval before a vote in the larger General Assembly.

Ishtayeh said the letter will state: "Palestine is a peace-loving state and has contributed to human civilization, that it has succeeded in building state institutions." It would also cite the need to consider the pre-1967 Mideast War borders as those of the Palestinian state, he said.

Although any submission by the Palestinians could wait weeks or months for U.N. action, it has sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity with Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the two sides back to the negotiating table.

Shaath said last ditch efforts to dissuade the Palestinian president from approaching the Security Council had failed and that offers had fallen short of Palestinian aspirations. He said Palestinians had been threatened with harsh punitive measures but had decided to move ahead nonetheless.

The comment appeared to refer to the warnings by some in the U.S. Congress that current and future financial aid to the Palestinian Authority could be in jeopardy if they move ahead with the membership bid.

Long-standing issues
Each side in on-again-off-again Israeli-Palestinian talks has accused the other of being an untrustworthy and intransigent participant in the peace process.

Video: Abbas not backing down (on this page) In a statement, Netanyahu called on Abbas to begin "direct negotiations in New York and continue them in Jerusalem and Ramallah." But the statement provided no other details or indications that Netanyahu was willing to cede to any of the Palestinians' demands.

Ban "reiterated his support for the two-state solution and stressed his desire to ensure that the international community and the two parties can find a way forward for resuming negotiations within a legitimate and balanced framework," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said after the secretary-general met with Abbas.

The comment underscored the desires of some members of the Quartet of Mideast mediators that Palestinian statehood should not be granted before a resumption of peace talks. While the four international mediators have repeatedly called for renewed negotiations, Russia supports U.N. membership for Palestine.

The long-stalled negotiations have been unable to solve key issues including Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and the status of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital.

Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed at a Monday night meeting that the Quartet envoys should meet again for the third straight day on Tuesday, officials said.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic work, said progress was being made on a joint Quartet statement that would include a modest upgrade to Palestinian status at the U.N., address Israel's demand that it be recognized as a Jewish state, and set a broad timeline for renewed negotiations.

The timeframe wouldn't be a deadline, as such, but would be aimed at addressing the Palestinian desire to see quick action. The offer would come with an unchanged message that Washington would veto the Palestinian bid at the Security Council for U.N. membership, but at the very least it would represent a dignity-saving compromise for Abbas' U.S.-backed government.

By already promising a veto in the Security Council, the U.S. has blocked that course for the Palestinians before they even submit the request.

Alternatively, the Palestinians could seek the approval of a majority of the General Assembly's 193 member states to upgrade their status from a permanent observer to a nonmember observer state ? a designation that would leave them with a symbolic victory despite years of failed negotiations and waning hopes for statehood.

In either scenario, the Palestinians will have shown they have the power to force action on the issue at a time when Israel is feeling increasingly isolated in the region.

Israel's relations with regional allies Turkey, Egypt and Jordan have soured, while resentment against the Jewish state is on the upswing in the midst of a wave of uprisings in the Arab world that have ousted the longtime leaders of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Israel's embassy in Cairo was stormed by protesters last week ? an incident that severely strained relations between the two neighbors who signed a peace treaty more than three decades ago.

An essay about my mother - Motherhood Cafe

My mother is absolutely amazing. She has had four kids, and has done so much for each of us. She doesn't favor any one over the other, no matter if one does something great, while the others just sit back and watch. The next time she just makes sure to encourage the others to take action.

When she was pregnant with me, her third child, she decided to start home schooling. A big factor in it was that my sister, the oldest child, was in fourth grade, and had already changed schools about seven times. It worked out well. She always keeps it going. I think it was a good choice for us. As proof you can take my two older siblings. They have both graduated high-school, and gone on to college. The oldest has graduated college, and gotten married.

She finds tons of opportunities for us, such as sports or music, or just random little things for us to do.

She encourages us with everything we do, and shows us that we can do anything if we set our minds to it. Because of what she's shown me, I don't think I will ever be afraid of what the future may hold.

A while before I came into existence, my mother had gotten saved. She taught all of her children about the Lord. She kept the Bible as a guide to raising us. In turn we all got saved, and the Lord has continued to be the guide in our lives even when we're not around her.

She answers our questions to the best of her knowledge, whether it be about the Bible or otherwise. She always seems to have the right answers, and if we don't understand what she meant the first time she finds a new way to explain it.

She is an amazing cook, and that's not just coming from her family. Many comment on how good her food is. They know this because she loves to have people over for dinner, or parties, or just because. She is a great hostess, and it's always a blast having people over, even though there are extra dishes afterwards.

She is very easy-going, but she requires obedience. So, we all know how to take orders with a good attitude. She taught us common sense, so we know what orders not to take, and also how to not take them kindly. So as not to offend.

She can handle a ton. Over a year ago now, one of the times my dad was deployed, my mother's mom died. While it was hard enough, for her mother to die, with her husband deployed at the time, she also found that multiple of her close friends weren't really her friends after all. Even while dealing with all of this, she was a wonderful mother, and she kept teaching us. Not just with school, but also with her life.

I have learned so much from her, and I hope to be a bit like her, if not more. I want my future family to grow up much like I have, because it has been an amazing experience, and I have learned so much.

Tea Tasting At Thornes Foods, Upper Gardner Street, Brighton ...

As part of the Brighton & Hove Festival of Food and Drink Festival, Jennifer Wood of the Canton Tea Company held a tea tasting workshop upstairs in the restaurant at Thornes today. It was much more than tasting different teas with some rather nice cakes however, [although it was that as well]. Jennifer held us spellbound as she took us on a verbal tour of the history of tea, and such is her obvious love of the subject we were hardly aware that we were absorbing a wealth of knowledge. The history encompassed geography, botany, climate, culture and politics spanning centuries and continents, with the most wonderful tea related anecdotes bringing it all alive for us. I gave up drinking any tea but herbal a while ago, but after tasting some of these teas I may well review that decision ? particularly as the loose Puerh tea that Thornes stock has a remarkable similarity of flavour to my favourite Springback 15 year old single malt whisky!
We progressed from the lightness of Jasmine Pearls, sweetly aromatic Jasmine Tea through a White Tea -? Silver Needle [Yin Zhen] with its light delicate flavour, Green Tea ? Pouchong with its delicate bright fresh flavour, on to Oolong Tea ? the famous Iron Buddha [Tie Guan Yin] that is lightly roasted to give a fuller flavour, popular throughout China, and on to two very special teas: Superior Bai Lin Gong Fu, a rare and delicious Black Tea with a rich smooth flavour and finally onto the Canton Tea Co Puerhh Beeng Cha, of which we tried two different versions, the loose Puerr and the 2011 Special Yi Wu Big Tree Raw Beeng Cha. This special tea from Yunnan is made exclusively for the company. It has a very distinctive flavour and is believed to have extraordinary health giving properties. Which for something that tastes so good can?t be right surely?!
You can taste some of these teas yourself in the restaurant at Thornes, or buy some to take home with you in the shop.
