Tanker run aground by superstorm

(ABC News)

Powerful storm surges from Superstorm Sandy caused a nearly 170-foot water tanker to run aground in Staten Island, N.Y., on Monday night.

The front third of the tanker is grounded into Front Street. The city?s waterfront was largely destroyed, which includes a number of businesses on the water.

The 168-foot tanker was moored about a mile away when Sandy?s powerful force propelled it toward land.

No one was on the tanker and no one was hurt as a result of it running aground.

Sandy struck the East Coast on Monday night, leaving a trail of massive flooding, power outages and destruction. President Obama has issued disaster declarations for New York and New Jersey.

?Flight? Hits Some Turbulence | Triangle Arts and Entertainment

Flight

In ?Flight,? Denzel Washington unapologetically drinks, smokes marijuana, snorts cocaine, lies, convinces others to lie on his behalf and pretty much acts like an awful human being for the entire film. The only thing he does do right is crash an airplane.

And oh, what a crash it is.

In one of the most suspenseful sequences of the year, Whip (Washington), drunk and high, is the only person that keeps his cool as the plane he?s piloting goes into a sharp nosedive in the middle of a storm. The co-pilot panics and the passengers pray, but Whip is cool as a cucumber. It may even be the coolest Washington has ever been. As the trailer reveals, he inverts the plane to halt the dive, saving the lives of most everyone on the flight. Instead of being hailed a hero though, a toxicology report reveals Whip?s addiction, resulting in a possible jail sentence.

Director Robert Zemeckis, making his first live action film since the Tom Hanks mega hit ?Cast Away,? still has a flair for the cinematic, so much so that he even makes a conversation between three people in a stairwell visually stimulating. Sadly, he still can?t keep things from becoming redundant and sometimes corny.

At 138 minutes, ?Flight? occupies the majority of its run time with Whip drinking, drinking some more, then drinking even more for good measure. Characters float in and out, like John Goodman?s funny, Southern drug dealer, who disappears for what feels like 90 minutes only to turn up at the end in a disgraceful scene that tries to make light of how deep Whip?s addiction truly goes. Don Cheadle occasionally appears as Whip?s lawyer to chastise his drinking, while at the same time trying to get him out of trouble. The rest of the time is spent on Whip?s relationship with a recovering heroin addict, which has no real impact on the main plot.

Everyone agrees that Whip was the only person who could have successfully landed the plane that crashed, but it doesn?t serve as anything more than a magnificent sequence that really seems to have little effect on Whip. He was a drunk before the crash and he?s still a drunk after the crash.

If nothing else, the stunning plane crash makes ?Flight? worth seeing. The problem is, it sets the bar so high for the rest of the film you can?t help but feel let down and disappointed. It?s almost like coming down off of an amazing high and crashing, sort of like an addict.

Bullying has long-term health consequences

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Childhood bullying can lead to long term health consequences, including general and mental health issues, behavioral problems, eating disorders, smoking, alcohol use, and homelessness, a study by the Crime Victims' Institute at Sam Houston State University found.

"What is apparent from these results is that bullying victimization that occurs early in life may have significant and substantial consequences for those victims later in life," said Leana Bouffard, Director of the Crime Victims' Institute. "Thus, the adverse health consequences of victimization are much more far-reaching than just immediate injury or trauma. Understanding these long term consequences is important to assessing the true toll of crime on its victims and on society as well as responding to victims more effectively."

The study, "The Long Term Health Consequences of Bullying Victimization," recommends investing in victim services and effective prevention programs, such as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a school based initiative for violence prevention. Programs can help address the immediate trauma, both mental and physical, that victims experience.

"This type of investment may also have the added benefit of reducing the long-term deleterious effects identified in this and other studies, thus reducing the high cost of victimization born by the victims themselves, the health care system and society in general," Bouffard said.

The current study is based on the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, a long term study that tracks a sample of U.S. residents born between 1980 and 1984. Nineteen percent of those surveyed said they had been a victim of repeated bullying.

The study found that those bullying victims had more negative perceptions of their general health and mental health and higher rates of emotional/mental or behavioral problems that interfered with school or work. They were also more likely to have an eating disorder, smoke, consume alcohol, experience subsequent violent victimization, or be homeless.

"While these are adverse consequences themselves, they may also serve as intermediate mechanism for even more long-term health issues, such as cancer, alcoholism, depression and other serious problems," said Maria Koeppel, co-author of the study.

Honeybees harbor antibiotic-resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Bacteria in the guts of honeybees are highly resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline, probably as a result of decades of preventive antibiotic use in domesticated hives. Researchers from Yale University identified eight different tetracycline resistance genes among U.S. honeybees that were exposed to the antibiotic, but the genes were largely absent in bees from countries where such antibiotic use is banned.

The study appears on October 30 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

"It [resistance] seems to be everywhere in the U.S.," says Nancy Moran of Yale University, a senior author on the study. "There's a pattern here, where the U.S. has these genes and the others don't."

Honeybees the world over are susceptible to the bacterial disease called "foulbrood," which can wipe out a hive faster than beekeepers can react to the infection. In the U.S., beekeepers have kept the disease at bay with regular preventive applications of the antibiotic oxytetracycline, a compound that closely resembles tetracycline, which is commonly used in humans. Oxytetracycline has been in use among beekeepers since the 1950s, and many genes that confer resistance to oxytetracycline also confer resistance to tetracycline.

Using sensitive molecular techniques, Moran and her colleagues screened honeybees from several locations in the United States and from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand as well as several wild bumblebees from the Czech Republic, for the presence and abundance of tetracycline resistance genes. They found that U.S. honeybees have greater numbers and a more diverse set of tetracycline resistance genes than honeybees from the other countries.

Moran says it is reasonable to expect to see widespread resistance among bees, considering the decades-long use of oxytetracycline in honeybee hives. "It seems likely this reflects a history of using oxytetracycline since the 1950s. It's not terribly surprising. It parallels findings in other domestic animals, like chickens and pigs," says Moran.

Moran notes that beekeepers have long used oxytetracycline to control the bacterium that causes foulbrood, but the pathogen eventually acquired resistance to tetracycline itself. Of the foulbrood pathogens Melissococcus pluton and Paenibacillus larvae, Moran says, "They carry tetL, which is one of the eight resistance genes we found. It's possible that the gene was transferred either from the gut bacteria to the pathogen or from the pathogen to the gut bacteria."

Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand do not allow beekeepers to use oxytetracycline in hives, so it is perhaps predictable that honeybees and wild bumblebees from these countries harbored only two or three different resistance genes and only in very low copy numbers, suggesting that the bacteria did not require the genes very frequently.

The authors of the study point out that by encouraging resistance and altering the bacteria that live in honeybee guts, decades of antibiotic applications may have actually been detrimental to honeybee wellbeing. Studies have suggested that the bacterial residents of the honeybee gut play beneficial roles in neutralizing toxins in the bees' diet, nutrition, and in defending the bee against pathogens. By disrupting the honeybee microbiota and reducing its diversity, long-term antibiotic use could weaken honeybee resistance to other diseases. Hence, the treatment that was meant to prevent disease and strengthen the hive may actually weaken its ability to fight off other pathogens.

Moran says while the study is interesting from the perspective of honeybee health and could have implications for how honeybee diseases are managed, the presence of resistance genes in the honeybee gut doesn't pose a direct risk to humans. These gut bacteria, says Moran, "don't actually live in the honey, they live in the bee. We've never actually detected them in the honey. When people are eating honey, they're not eating these bacteria."

Washington Redskins v Pittsburgh SteelersGetty Images

Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall was ejected from Sunday?s game against the Steelers for a confrontation with an official, and he likely faces a hefty fine. But Hall says any discipline he faces should be handed out to the official as well.

Hall said on 106.7 The Fan that head linesman Dana McKenzie was giving just as good as he got in their verbal exchange. It sure didn?t look that way on TV ? it looked like Hall was screaming in McKenzie?s face and sticking his finger about an inch from McKenzie?s nose, and that McKenzie was showing admirable restraint ? but Hall said the TV angles were deceiving.

?From that particular camera angle you can?t see what that ref?s saying to me,? Hall said, via the Washington Post. ?So it looks like I?m just out there giving him a piece of my mind and he?s smiling and walks away. And that?s not the case at all. He?s dishing it out just as much as I?m dishing it out.?

Hall said he?s hoping to show the league office a different angle of the incident before the league determines any punishment.

?It was just a back and forth between me and that particular ref,? Hall said. ?And I can?t go into too many details because it?s still under review. But that?s kind of how it took place. If you look at the TV copy, you can only see me. That?s why we?re trying to get other copies and other angles so you can see both sides. But me and the ref was equally at fault on that particular play.?

Hall also indicated that he wants the league office to consider what kind of person he is.

?I?m not a criminal. I?ve never been in trouble with the law. I?m a great guy. Like I said, off the field I?m a different person, you know what I mean, than I am on the field,? Hall said. ?We?re just trying to get every point of view, make sure we get as much proof as possible that happened in that situation and bring it to the forefront so we can come up with the right solution handed down to both sides.?

Hall was upset that Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders took a shot at him and wasn?t flagged for it, and Hall says he?s also upset about the way the officials treat him.

?Nobody is going out there trying to bully the referees and likewise, they shouldn?t be out there trying to bully us,? Hall said.

Hall is right that the officials shouldn?t try to bully the players. But it sure didn?t look like the official in question was trying to bully Hall. It looked like the official was doing his job, and Hall was acting like a jerk.

Fast Programs Of Using PLR In The USA | EzinePR

Grocery stores get it done. Vitamin supplement sellers do it. Even appliance manufacturers take action. And now online business owners take advantage with this low-cost product creation method too. I?m discussing using plr merchandise.

If you?ve ever bought store-brand canned goods, blue jeans, or perhaps a refrigerator, it is likely you are mindful of how private-label rights works. Basically, a shop buys a product or service ? let?s use soft ice cream as an example ? and pays the manufacturer to place a shop?s label on the item. They are purchasing the right to sell another manufacturer?s item as their own. It?s a proven method of lowering manufacturing costs and increasing profits, so that as an Internet marketer, you?re at a disadvantage if you?re not taking advantage of private label rights content.

How PLR Works

Just as with our frozen goodies example, whenever you buy PLR you buy the to call it your own personal. You don?t have to be worried about giving attribution towards the author, or providing a link back to his / her site. You lack to ? and possibly shouldn?t ? even acknowledge that this article began life as PLR. In other words, you can find lots of content to your website or blog at an affordable price, along with very little work.

Read the License

Before buying ? or using ? plr rights content, make sure you read the license. Most sellers place hardly any restrictions on what their products are widely-used, though there are many standard rules you?ll want to consider. Typically, that you can do anything you like with PLR, including rewriting it, adding your business as the author, changing the format, combining it along with other articles to make a longer work, or breaking a good piece into smaller parts.

What you generally can?t do with PLR is resell it as PLR, though there are some sellers who allow this at the same time. Again, make sure you read the license, so when in doubt, ask the owner about any specific usages you just aren?t sure of.

Change the Content

Once you?ve purchased your private-label rights articles, it is important that you change the crooks to suit your way of writing and content needs. You may have purchased the highest-quality PLR available, however it still is not written using your unique audience at heart.

Start by rewriting the title. The title?s job is site visitors to see the article. It must supply a compelling synopsis of the article itself, using a clear reason to hold reading. It?s also recommended that you include the primary keyword in the title, so the search engines can discover you.

If you might have time, a line-by-line rewrite can change PLR right into an unique article with no worries you will find your content on another woman?s site. However, busy marketers often don?t have time for any complete overhaul. In that case, rewriting the first and last paragraphs will make the content fit better using your style of writing.

Obviously, should you be using PLR on your personal site or perhaps in your newsletter, terms of service don?t come up. However, if you are going to use PLR on other sites including article directories, Squidoo, HubPages, or perhaps a self-publishing platform like Create Space, you need to be aware of any restrictions they place on PLR content.

Some article directories expressly forbid the use of private label rights articles, and can terminate your if they find you in violation on this rule. Their reasoning is that so many PLR buyers don?t affect the content in any respect, that they can run the risk of having many versions of the exact same article on their site. This is a waste of the resources, and does not offer value with their readers, in order to understand why they forbid the usage of PLR content.

Using plr rights articles can make content creation easier and less costly, in terms of both time and expense spent. To make working with PLR even easier, make sure to start with quality content purchased in reputable vendors. With just a few packaging changes, you can change PLR content into unique, useful articles readers will enjoy.

Feds likely to manage Maine's health insurance exchange ...

AUGUSTA, Maine ? The Affordable Care Act set a Nov. 16 deadline for states to declare whether they intend to establish their own health insurance exchange. It?s a key provision of the act, one that is intended to provide affordable insurance to uninsured individuals and small-business employees starting Jan. 1, 2014.

While Maine has not formally announced its intention, it is so far behind in preparing its own exchange that the federal model will likely be adopted by default.

When asked for confirmation that Gov. Paul LePage won?t be pursuing a state-run exchange, his press secretary, Adrienne Bennett, told Mainebiz she had nothing to report on the subject and that the state ?is currently assessing options.?

But Mitchell Stein, policy director for the Augusta-based Consumers for Affordable Health Care, says even if LePage declares in the next month that Maine intends to create a state-run exchange, that?s only one step in the process.

The federal government has a 27-page checklist of steps that must be followed in order for a state to be certified as being on track to meet the ACA?s October 2013 enrollment period and the Jan. 1, 2014, opening of the exchange. And on that front, Stein says, Maine will have a tough job convincing the federal government it will be ready to open its own exchange a little more than a year from now ? given that LePage, in an April 18 letter, informed the federal Department of Health and Human Services he was turning back a $5.8 million grant that was to help pay for many of the federal government?s set-up requirements.

?There?s a tremendous amount of work to be done,? Stein says, citing as one example the required integration of the exchange?s eligibility systems with existing Medicaid eligibility systems to ensure a low-income enrollee who?s eligible for Medicaid gets referred to that program instead.

Other requirements include:

? Making sure the exchange has a seamless enrollment system that?s able to handle in-person, phone or online applications with equity.

? Having the ability to interface with the Internal Revenue Service to ensure that applicants meet the ACA?s income guidelines for enrolling in a health insurance exchange.

? Providing ?apples-to-apples? comparisons between different insurance policies available through the exchange so that consumers can make informed choices.

Stein acknowledges meeting all the requirements of setting up a state-run health insurance exchange involves costs that in a tough economy might be regarded as unaffordable. ?Much of it would have been paid by federal grants? included in the ACA?s enabling legislation, he says.

Getting ready, or not

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, 125,600 Mainers are uninsured, or roughly 10 percent of the population.

Exchanges are expected to provide competitive marketplaces in which the uninsured can directly compare and purchase private health insurance options that meet their needs. The idea is that, pooled together, their numbers will be large enough to gain coverage that individually would be too expensive to buy. For certain low- and moderate-income uninsured people, the federal government will provide subsidies to make such coverage more affordable, or in some cases, they could be referred to Medicaid for coverage.

In a Sept. 27 status report, the Kaiser Family Foundation identifies Maine as one of eight states already serving notice to the federal government that they won?t be pursuing a state-based health insurance exchange ? the others being Alaska, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, South Dakota and New Hampshire. Kaiser says that number could grow, since 16 states are still studying their options and eight others have not shown any significant activity moving in the direction of creating a state-run exchange.

As CAHC?s policy director, Stein says he attended hearings in the last legislative session on two competing bills to create a state-run exchange. In their initial versions, he says, both LD 1498, favored by Democrats, and the Republicans? LD 1497, agreed on having Maine establish and operate its own exchange. In the end, a watered-down version of LD 1497 was adopted, stating that only licensed insurance brokers can enroll people in health plans through an exchange.

Even if Maine opts out and the state ends up with a federally run exchange on Jan. 1, 2014, Stein says the state will have yearly opportunities to apply for approval of a state-run exchange down the road. Likewise, he says, the next Legislature could very well resurrect elements of the two failed bills calling for a state-run exchange.

Stein says the obvious downside of having the federal government run Maine?s exchange is that it removes local control and flexibility over how the program is set up and run. A potential plus, he says, is that it would likely fall somewhere in the middle of what he characterizes as the ?passive? pro-insurance industry focus of the initial version of the GOP?s LD 1497 and the ?active? pro-consumer emphasis of the Democrats? LD 1498.

?There are a lot of moving pieces here and some of the moving pieces haven?t been determined yet,? he says.

Florida and Massachusetts Shut Down More Compounding Pharmacies

Following on the heels of the state of Massachusetts, where officials announced on Sunday that they had shuttered a third compounding pharmacy for alleged health and safety violations, Florida officials announced on Monday that they have closed down their first compounding pharmacy. According to a report by Reuters, Rejuvi Pharmaceuticals, which is based in Boca Raton, violated "a number" of health regulations.

The news follows a crackdown on the operations of compounding pharmacies across the United States in the wake of the meningitis outbreak caused by tainted injectables that had been compounded by the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts. The tainted injectables, which contained a particular variety of fungus, have now been linked to more than 354 cases of infection and 25 deaths, according to reports by NBC News and other media outlets.

Here is some of the key information regarding the crackdown on compounding pharmacies that continues around the U.S.

* The FDA released an official statement on Oct. 26 regarding the agency's investigation into the New England Compounding Center (NECC). Among the FDA's findings were several instances where company officials noted the presence of mold and bacteria in the center's "clean room," a situation that remained unaddressed for much of the year. The FDA also noted that the NECC violated regulations pertaining to the dispensing of prescription drugs.

* The FDA announced in its statement that the NECC had been issued a Form 483, which is an official document stating that agency inspectors "believe that they observed conditions or practices" which could point to major health violations.

* The agency did caution in its press release that a Form 483 is not a "final FDA determination," and that its investigation into the meningitis outbreak is ongoing. NECC has been stripped of its license and has shut its doors.

* Massachusetts health officials, who had noted violations by NECC prior to the meningitis outbreak, have cracked down on other compounding pharmacies in the state. The Massachusetts branch of Infusion Resource is the latest compounding pharmacy to be shut down after surprise inspections turned up possible violations, according to a New York Times report on Sunday.

* Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick had ordered state health officials to begin conducting unannounced inspections of compounding pharmacies in the state that deal specifically with injectable medications last week, after preliminary reports indicated that state regulations governing such facilities were "insufficient," as quoted by the New York Times.

* According to Monday's report by NBC News, Rejuvi Pharmaceuticals in Florida was shut down by state health officials for multiple violations, which included concerns regarding the "cleanliness of the prescription department" and "the compounding of medications," among other violations.

* Rejuvi had reportedly been cited for the same issues before, and the most recent inspection concluded that the problems had not been addressed after they were brought to the company's attention.

Coach Christensen's Rant Put Into Song | My Country 95.5

Ethan Miller, Getty Images

Wyoming Cowboys Coach Dave Christensen delivered a profanity?laden?speech?following the Wyoming vs. Air Force game on October 13th has now been turned into a parody song entitled ? Coach Christensen?s Rantin? Blues.

Christensen yelling at Air Force head coach Troy Callhoun following the game, which the UW Cowboys football team lost in the 4th quarter in Laramie. ?The contention is over an injury that some would say, the Air Force player faked an injury to stop the clock.

In the days following an uncensored?YouTube?video of the incident leaked and went viral. ?That video has since been removed.

Christensen?s Cowboys had just lost the match 28-27 against the rival Falcons when the two coaches met at mid field:???nice ethics?? Christensen says several times, ?No have no [expletive] ethics Troy; no [expletive] integrity,? the coach shouts before he is ushered off the field. ?Coach Christensen was suspended for one game for his conduct, and as a result the UW Cowboys were beaten 45-14 by the Boise State Broncos.

The incident has spawned several picture memes and, now, a parody video that puts the words from Christensen?s rant into a blues song. ?The video has, so far, garnered about 17,000 views.

Due to the profane nature of the language in the rant, and subsequently the song, we would like to warn you that this video is not safe for work ? as well as for young children. This video can be construed as offensive.

Kennedy Krieger researchers find a preclinical phase in children with autism that is not easily detected

In the largest prospective study to date of children with early and later manifestation of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) compared to children without ASD, researchers found two distinct patterns of language, social and motor development in the children with ASD. Published in the journal Child Development, the study found that early in development, children who display early signs of ASD show greater initial delay across multiple aspects of development compared to children whose ASD symptoms emerge later. However at 36 months of age, the early differences between these groups are no longer obvious. By the third birthday, the level of impairment between these symptom onset groups of children with ASD is comparable. Additionally, researchers uncovered a preclinical phase of ASD in which the signs of delay are not easily detected with existing clinical tests.

Previous research by Kennedy Krieger Institute researchers found that approximately half of all children with ASD can be diagnosed around the first birthday, while the remaining half do not show diagnostic indicators until later. The current study builds upon these findings by further evaluating motor and language development in a wider age span of children diagnosed with ASD (6 to 36 months), and examining how development unfolds differently in each group.

"Regardless of diagnosis, the development of children with and without ASD appears similar at six months of age on clinical tests," says Dr. Rebecca Landa, lead author and director of Kennedy Krieger's Center for Autism and Related Disorders. "However, for those children who went on to develop autism, the earliest signs of atypical development were non-specific to autism, such as general communication or motor delay."

About the Study

Participants included 204 infant siblings of children with ASD, who are at a higher genetic risk for developing ASD, and 31 infants with no family history of ASD. The infants were examined at 6, 14, 18, 24, 30 and 36 months of age. Confirmation of ASD classification was made at the 30 or 36 month visit for all participants because diagnosis at this age is considered definitive. At each visit, researchers evaluated the infants for motor, language, communication, social-affective and symbolic abilities, as well as typical symptoms of ASD.

Based on gold standard ASD assessments, infants were divided into three groups: Early-ASD, Later-ASD and Non-ASD. Both ASD groups (54 infants total) were confirmed to have ASD at 36 months; however the Early-ASD group (28 infants) received a clinical judgment of ASD symptomology at 14 months, whereas the Later-ASD group (26 infants) did not. The Non-ASD group (181 infants) did not meet outcome criteria for ASD.

Developmental Patterns

Early-ASD versus Later-ASD

  • By 14 months, the Early-ASD group exhibited significantly lower expressive language and shared social smiling scores than the Later-ASD group.
  • By 18 months, the Early-ASD group exhibited greater delays in receptive and expressive language development compared to the Later-ASD group.
  • At 24 months, this gap between the Early- and Later-ASD groups had closed due to increasing impairment in the later-ASD group.
  • At 30 and 36 months, there were no detectable differences between the Early- and Later-ASD groups.

Early-ASD versus Non-ASD groups

  • At 6 months, the Early-ASD and Non-ASD groups exhibited comparable development.
  • At 14 months, the Early-ASD group diverged from Non-ASD development in all measured aspects of development, except for fine motor functioning.
  • These differences were sustained through 36 months.

Later-ASD versus Non-ASD groups

  • At 6 months, the Later-ASD and Non-ASD groups exhibited comparable development.
  • At 14 months, the Later-ASD group's scores were significantly lower than the Non-ASD group's for fine motor and some language skills.
  • At 24 and 36 months, the Later-ASD group performed below the Non-ASD group on all abilities examined except fine motor functioning at 24 months.

Dr. Landa noted that patterns of slowing, plateauing and decline in development in children with ASD occurred within the timeframe when parents report first concerns about children with ASD. The subtlety of early signs and a gradual shift from typical development may not be detected by ASD screeners or by health professionals in a brief office visit. Thus, parent's expression of concern about their toddler's development or behavior requires careful consideration.

"If parents aren't seeing their children steadily develop new skills, they should talk to their pediatrician or contact their local early intervention program," says Dr. Landa. "Results from this study show that communication delays are often present in the second year of life in children with autism, especially involving language comprehension."

Further research is needed with a larger population of children with ASD and using behavioral and biological measures that may detect more subtle indicators of disrupted development in children with ASD in the first year of life. With larger studies, researchers can conduct more detailed analyses of developmental advances in children with ASD, which may facilitate the development of better early ASD screening tools and thereby improving access to earlier intervention. Studies have shown that early intervention improves language, social and cognitive outcomes for children with ASD.

Google Nexus 4 hands-on (video)

Google Nexus 4 handson

So here it is at last, the Nexus 4. After countless leaks we finally got a chance to put our dirty little paws on Google and LG's lovechild. The verdict? It's simply phenomenal. By combining the nicest elements of the Optimus G with the latest iteration of Jelly Bean (Android 4.2) the two companies have created something that's better than the sum of its parts. Like its cousin, the Nexus 4 is built around Qualcomm's speedy 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdradon S4 Pro SoC with Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Storage comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors with no microSD expansion. It features the same lovely 4.7-inch 1280x768-pixel non-PenTile IPS display but sheds LTE support for an unlocked pentaband DC-HSPA+ (42Mbps) radio and wireless charging. On the camera front the Nexus 4 inherits the Optimus G's optional eight-megapixel BSI sensor and f/2.4 autofocus lens, instead of the fancier 13 MP shooter. WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, NFC and Miracast round up the spec sheet, and a sealed 2100mAh Li-polymer battery completes the package.

Aesthetically, the Nexus 4 blends aspects of the Optimus G and Galaxy Nexus designs, with a glass-covered back and rounded-off top and bottom edges. This phone looks and feels great -- materials and build quality are much improved over last year's handset. At 9.1mm (0.36 inches) thin and 131g (0.31 pounds), it's also very comfortable in hand. Most of the controls are unchanged from its cousin -- you'll find a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and secondary mic on top, a volume rocker and micro-SIM tray on the left, a micro-USB port and primary mic on the bottom, and a power / lock button on the right side. The Optimus G's capacitive keys give way to on-screen buttons and the RGB notification light moves below the screen (from its former position near the 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera). Overall we're really impressed with the Nexus 4, and that's just from playing with the hardware. Sadly, we spent very little time exploring the software, which includes a plethora of improvements, so keep an eye out for the details in our full review.

You'll be able to purchase the Nexus 4 unlocked in the Play Store starting November 13th for $299 (8GB), $349 (16GB) or $199 with a two-year contract on T-Moble (16GB). Until then, check out the gallery below, then hit the break for our hands-on video.

(AP) ? LeBron James got cramps, Ray Allen was snubbed and Dwyane Wade was steaming.

None of that spoiled the Miami Heat mood on ring night.

Wade scored 29 points, James finished 26 points and 10 rebounds while missing much of the second half because of cramps in both legs, and the reigning NBA champion Heat beat the Boston Celtics 120-107 on Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

There were actual fireworks before the game to close the ceremony where the Heat got their championship rings and raised their title banner. There also were plenty of figurative fireworks late, first with Boston almost digging out of a 19-point hole and, after the outcome was decided, Rajon Rondo flagrantly fouling Wade by wrapping his arms around his neck on a drive.

In the end, though, the first Celtics-Heat matchup of this season was like the final one of last season ? with Miami winning.

"It was good to cap this night off with a win," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was an emotional time for all of us in our organization."

Even for the newcomers, like Allen. He scored 19 points ? needing only seven field goal attempts ? in his first game with Miami since leaving Boston over the summer. Chris Bosh had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Miami.

Allen got chants from the Heat crowd, which is nothing new. Except this time, they were positive.

"Never thought I'd hear that here," Allen said.

Paul Pierce scored 23 points, Rondo finished with 20 points and 13 assists, and Leandro Barbosa scored 16 for Boston. The Celtics, who lost to the Heat in last season's Eastern Conference finals, were not on the court for the ring ceremony.

They almost wrecked the festive mood with a late comeback.

An 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter got Boston within 111-107 on Courtney Lee's layup with 2:09 left. That was the last Celtics' hurrah ? Bosh scored the game's next seven points, sealing it for Miami.

"I thought they were the aggressor the whole game," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "They got on the floor where they wanted to get on the floor. They took us out of stuff that they wanted to."

Rashard Lewis scored 10 points for Miami, which held on even while James, last season's MVP of both the regular season and NBA Finals, was in the locker room for the second time because of the cramps, first in his right leg and then his left.

"It's not an all-the-time thing," James said. "I'm not too worried about it."

The Heat got their championship rings from owner Micky Arison before the game, then watched the banner get hoisted to the rafters. More emotion came late, when Wade drove past Rondo ? and the Celtics guard grabbed Wade around the neck. Wade appeared as though he was ready to throw the ball at Rondo in retaliation, and stopped himself.

"I thought he hooked me," Rondo said.

Wade had a different opinion.

"It was a punk play by him," Wade said. "The league will take care of it. He clotheslined me, with two hands."

So Rondo raised eyebrows by putting hands on Wade. Kevin Garnett made news by not offering his hand to Allen.

As Allen entered the game for the first time, he trotted toward the Boston bench, exchanging a handshake, embrace and a few words with Rivers, who hasn't hidden his displeasure about his former shooting guard's decision to sign with Miami and didn't sound certain before the game how he would react when he saw Allen in Miami colors. Allen then briskly shook hands with a few assistant coaches.

But when Allen tried to engage Garnett, the mutual pleasantries ended. Allen tapped Garnett on the shoulder as he sat on the Boston bench; Garnett didn't even flinch, staring straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge the gesture in any way.

"I was just trying to focus as much as I could. I am such an intense person," Garnett said. "It was a blank. Obviously he's on the other side. It's time to play the game, man."

Allen didn't seem flustered. His first shot in a Miami uniform was ? what else? ? a corner 3-pointer, which swished.

"He was by himself in the corner," Rivers said. "You'd think we'd know better."

Miami controlled much of the first half, taking a 62-54 lead after James went by Pierce and Garnett for a two-handed dunk and yell for the crowd.

The first Heat angst of the season came in the third quarter, when James walked slowly to the bench after a timeout with 4:40 remaining, favoring his right leg and then headed out the tunnel toward the locker room.

When he left, the Miami lead was 79-70.

When he returned to open the fourth quarter, the lead was 93-76. The Heat scored the final eight points of the third, with Bosh, Allen, Mario Chalmers and Lewis all scoring in the final 2:17 to give the Heat their biggest lead of the game.

James ? who was dealing with a cramping issue, like he experienced at times in last season's NBA Finals ? opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to extend the run to 10-0, and Miami seemed well on its way. But he returned to the locker room a short time later, the cramps having flared up again.

"Once you start cramping, there's nothing you can do about it," James said.

Jeff Green, who had season-ending surgery for an aortic aneurysm last January, played in a game that counts for the first time since May 11, 2011 ? also in Miami, when the Heat ousted the Celtics from that season's playoffs. Green finished with three points in 23 minutes.

NOTES: Wade passed the 15,000-point mark for his career early in the second quarter, becoming the 123rd player in NBA history to reach that mark, according to STATS LLC. ... Rondo had at least 10 assists for the 25th straight regular-season game. ... The Celtics allowed 62 points in the first half; they gave up 62 or more only seven times in 379 regular-season and playoff games over the past four seasons. ... Miami players wore sneakers with gold somewhere in the color scheme; James' were primarily gold ? in honor of the ring ? and trimmed in white and red.

Women who quit smoking may gain up to 10 years of life - KFDA ...

SATURDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Smoking takes at least 10 years off women's lives but they can significantly reduce that risk if they quit smoking early enough, a new study suggests.

Researchers looked at more than 1 million women in the United Kingdom who were recruited when they were aged 50 to 65 and followed for 12 years. Initially, 20 percent of the women were smokers, 28 percent ex-smokers, and 52 percent had never smoked.

Women who still smoked three years into the study were nearly three times more likely to die in the following nine years than nonsmokers. This threefold increased risk of death means that two-thirds of all deaths of female smokers in their 50s, 60s and 70s are caused by smoking, the researchers said.

The death risk among smokers increased sharply with the amount smoked, but even those who were light smokers (1 to 9 cigarettes a day) at the start of the study were twice as likely to die as nonsmokers, according to the report published online Oct. 27 in The Lancet.

The investigators also found that women who had stopped smoking before the age of 40 avoided more than 90 percent of the increased risk of dying associated with continuing to smoke, while those who quit before 30 avoided more than 97 percent of that increased risk.

"If women smoke like men, they die like men -- but, whether they are men or women, smokers who stop before reaching middle age will on average gain about an extra 10 years of life," study co-author Sir Richard Peto, of the University of Oxford in England, said in a journal news release.

The authors of a commentary accompanying the study agreed that the findings are "simple and unequivocal."

"That we had to wait until the 21st century to observe the full consequences in women of a habit that was already widespread in the mid-20th century, when tobacco smoking pervaded much of the developed world, might seem paradoxical," wrote Rachel Huxley, of the University of Minnesota, and her co-author.

"But this is because, in most of Europe and the U.S.A., the popularity of smoking among young women reached its peak in the 1960s, decades later than for men," the editorialists explained. "Hence, previous studies have underestimated the full eventual impact of smoking on mortality in women, simply because of the lengthy time lag between smoking uptake by young women and disease onset in middle and old age."

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is sketching out political contingency plans that include temporarily suspending campaigning altogether if Hurricane Sandy turns deadly.

The Republican presidential candidate plans to go ahead with three rallies in three states on Monday, including a midday event in Avon Lake, Ohio. But, given the storm, he is expected to moderate his criticism of President Barack Obama and encourage supporters to make donations to relief efforts for storm victims.

Romney's Boston headquarters is monitoring storm developments and reviewing plans.

The campaign is also considering whether to send Romney to New Jersey later in the week to survey storm damage with Gov. Chris Christie.

Obama returned to the White House on Monday morning after canceling political events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in several states.

Walmart alone, in the #2 position on the 2012 Fortune 500 list, employs over two million people. Ford (9th largest) employs 165,000 and Bank of America (13th largest) employs almost 300,000. Whole Foods Market (264th largest) employs 60,000.

The cost of health care. In a 2012 Towers Watson Survey of 512 companies in the United States, the average cost of healthcare per employee was around $11,000, most of which is being paid by the employer.?I recently saw a 5-minute video online (provided below) of the CEO of Whole Foods Market talking about the cost of health care.

He reported that health care is costing his company $200 million a year and that they have launched a new way of lowering those costs. They have started promoting health. He knows that ?disease management? is very expensive and continues to go up each year?and he also knows that those costs can be reduced dramatically by simply helping employees learn to eat the right food. And that approach is paying off for Whole Foods.

John Mackey, Founder & CEO of Whole Foods Market

In the video, he reported that in just the past few years, the total cost of healthcare as a percent of sales had been declining. He has committed to building a strong ?wellness culture? throughout the entire organization. He knows that not only does a healthy employee incur less costs, but that ?a healthy employee is more productive?and ultimately, better for the bottom line of the company.

A new kind of insurance. As a self-insured company, Whole Foods is in a great position to begin experimenting with a new idea that Dr. John McDougall is proposing. Most large employers are already in the health insurance business. But those few, like Whole Foods, who are beginning to seriously promote health, are well-positioned to set up a second insurance plan which will be offered only to employees who qualify.

How do they qualify? By first being trained, then eating a much healthier diet and ultimately, achieving superior numbers when it comes to cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and other key indicators. Once those employees have effectively taken charge of their own health, they would be offered the opportunity to join the ?Healthy Employee Insurance? plan. And once they do, their monthly healthcare premium will go down by 50 to 75%.

And how does that plan work? As Dr. McDougall explained in his recent video on this topic, members of the new plan must understand that there are many things that will no longer be covered. Things like PSA tests, mammograms, aggressive treatment for diabetes and coronary artery disease, etc. This may shock some people at first?until they realize the facts. Healthy people, who?ve taken charge of their own health, will not need those kinds of treatments and tests and will not want to be paying the bill for those who do.

Dr. John McDougall

As news of this ?insurance plan? spreads, more and more people will be motivated to qualify for it: sign up for the training, learn how to make the dietary transition as they begin to enjoy the many benefits of taking charge of their own health. I concluded long ago that it would be big corporations who would ultimately ?tame the healthcare monster? in this country. That?s because they?re the only ones with a financial incentive to do so.

By creating a new kind of health insurance company within their corporation, these pioneering CEOs will be laying the groundwork for a complete overhaul of two major industries in this country: the food industry and the health industry. In the words of a famous American philosopher, this is what we have today:

People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health?and are treated by the health industry which pays no attention to food.?-Wendell Berry

In this one-hour video by Dr. John McDougall, he explains in greater detail his ?health insurance idea? discussed above. If you?re already familiar with Dr. McDougall, you should begin viewing the 27-minute mark. The first half of the video is devoted to his background.

When Dr. McDougall talked about doing away with PSA tests and mammograms, he backed up his statements with some hard facts by several highly respected organizations. One of them was the Cochrane Collaboration. Here?s how they describe themselves:

The?Cochrane Collaboration?is an international network of more than 28,000 dedicated people from over 100 countries.

Our vision?is that healthcare decision-making throughout the world will be informed by high-quality, timely research evidence.??We work together to help healthcare providers, policy-makers, patients, their advocates and carers, make well-informed decisions about health care, by preparing, updating, and promoting the accessibility of?Cochrane Reviews?? over 5,000 so far, published online in the?Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, part of?The Cochrane Library.

Here is that John Mackey video mentioned earlier. Take five minutes to see how the Whole Foods CEO promotes health and brings down the cost of health care. A true win-win for all concerned.

The Bottom Line.?The health care system in this country will change and so will the food industry. It is inevitable. As a few pioneering CEOs??begin teaching their people how to take charge of their own health, other CEOs will be forced to follow suit in order to be competitive. The food industry will follow suit and will produce the plant-based foods that the healthy people are now demanding.

This whole process must start somewhere. And it has, with CEO John Mackey at Whole Foods Market.?Earlier in this blog, I mentioned the ?wellness culture? that he is building at Whole Foods. It is important to emphasize that ALL employees should be included?not just the ones who have health benefits with the company.

Healthy employees, regardless of age or number of hours per week, are better employees. And better employees make for better, more profitable companies. The most successful CEOs will be those who weave ?self-health-promotion? deeply into the cultural fabric of the enterprise. And the companies who choose not to promote health?will have trouble competing with those who do. (My 632nd consecutive daily blog)
