Levine 'unfazed' by Shelton's barbs on 'Voice'

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

When "Voice" coach Adam Levine isn't working with his team of vocal hopefuls or evaluating the acts on stage, he's often busy cutting up with fellow coaches Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton -- the latter of whom never passes up an opportunity to try to put Levine in his place and rub in the fact that it's Shelton that's had the most recent win on the hit show.

So how does the Maroon 5 frontman really feel about the ribbing?

"(Blake) likes to do that," Levine told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Thursday morning. "But you what? I'm unfazed by it. He can taunt me all he wants, but at the end of the day, he knows that I'm cooler than he is."

And lest his part-friend/part-foe take offense, Levine added, "I love you, Blake ... slash hate you."

But while Shelton and Levine are still trash-talking their way through season three of the competition, filming for season four has already kicked off and Levine's without his other verbal sparring partners. Green and Aguilera are both taking a break for season four, while new coaches Shakira and Usher join the show.

"(They) are amazing -- kind of taking to it really quickly," Levine said of the newbie panelists.

As for whether or not he's already cracking wise with his new cohorts, he said, "Just a little bit. It hasn't gotten as deep yet. Once you get really comfortable with each other the trash talk starts to flow. It'll flow, don't worry."

Levine, whose contract keeps him in his spinning chair through the end of season four, hasn't yet decided if there's a "Voice" break in his own future. But between his work with Maroon 5 (which you can see for yourself in the clip below) and his budding acting career, he has plenty of options.

However, those options may or may not include more work in a horror, like his recent "American Horror Story: Asylum" gig.

"I don't like the horror genre very much," he explained. "So I told (creator) Ryan Murphy, I basically said, 'I don't like this show.'"

At least he liked the work.

Catch more from Levine on "The Voice," Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
