But this time, we found a few more that are opting for unlikely destinations. Mukesh Ambani and the family may be headed for Africa we hear. Though there could well be some last-minute changes.

The Akerkars, for instance, are planning on an "escape to Alibaug" where Rahul says, he and his friends will simply sit under a tree and while their time. And if that sounds incredible, Sangita Kathiwada is already in Australia, at her good friend Pavan Sukhdev's estate, in the heart of an ancient rainforest. "It's like standing still in the lap of luxurious nature," she gushed.

Sounding definitely upbeat, Queenie told us that she just got back from New York, where she had spent Christmas, and is headed to Goa in a couple of days to usher in the New Year. Meanwhile, wild horses may not be able to pull Riyhad Kundanmal away from his cosy abode in Mundhwa, where he has been cocooned for the longest time.

Beach babe Natasha Poonawala has taken off on a chartered flight to Phuket with her gaggle of merry friends, while Sidhartha Mallya is already in London. Among the legal eagles, both Zia Mody and Mahesh Jethmalani say they have no plans of getting out of the city.

Tour offers visitors a special screening of New Orleans (Reuters)

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) ? It's been more than 50 years since Blanche DuBois of the New Orleans-set play "A Streetcar Named Desire" wistfully declared that she had "always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Now, a local tour service brings strangers close to settings where the lives of DuBois and later fictional characters, such as Benjamin Button (portrayed by Brad Pitt) and "GI Joe" Colton (Bruce Willis), played out in dramatic style.

New Orleans Movie Tours owner Jonathan Ray personally escorts visitors to film locations and other movie-related spots. Sites related to 30 movies are now on the tour, he said.

"I want to be able to answer every question about every movie ever filmed here," Ray told Reuters.

He and his wife Michelle began the tours seven months ago with the idea of giving visitors a cameraman's view of New Orleans by highlighting its history as a filming location.

Twice a day, Jonathan Ray drives as many as 10 passengers around the city in a van equipped with individual video monitors.

At each location along the two-hour route, Ray shows clips from a movie or TV episode filmed at the site and offers anecdotes related to the location.

They visit a spot near the foot of Canal Street as they watch video of Vivien Leigh, starring in the 1951 film version of "Streetcar," stepping off a train and asking directions to a street called Elysian Fields.

When a scene from the 1991 movie "JFK" pops onto the screen, showing Kevin Costner's character in the French Quarter bar called Napoleon House, tour guests get to see the bar up close.

"We'll show you that clip while parked right outside the Napoleon House, and then we'll tell you about the history of the building, too," Ray said.

Guests, who pay $39 for the tour, also get popcorn and bottled water.

Ray, who worked behind the scenes on several locally-shot feature films, spent much of the last two years researching local movie history and amassing details about more than 100 classic and contemporary New Orleans-related productions, from the 1958 Elvis Presley movie "King Creole" to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008).

PRODUCTION HOTBED

Keeping up with local movie trivia is a growing challenge in a city that's become a hotbed of movie production.

Since 2002, when Louisiana implemented a tax credit program that gives producers financial breaks in exchange for making movies in the state, New Orleans has become one of the largest film centers in the country outside of Los Angeles.

Some 90 feature films and television productions came to Louisiana during 2011, according to the state's Department of Economic Development. New Orleans hosted more than half of those projects.

The industry's growth here has increased the chances a visitor wandering along local streets might bump into a screen idol such as Brad Pitt or Sandra Bullock, who own homes in the city, or Nicolas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Sylvester Stallone and a host of other stars who have worked here.

Guests on Ray's tour last week caught sight of Will Ferrell and Dylan McDermott as the van visited a location for "Dog Fight," a comedy slated for release in 2012.

Cris Roman, a recent visitor from Sauk Centre, Minnesota, said New Orleans Movie Tours gave him an insider's view of one of his favorite TV shows, the HBO series "Treme."

Now in production on its third season, the series uses sets throughout the city, including the series' namesake neighborhood just north of the historic French Quarter.

"I loved seeing the Treme neighborhood," Roman said. "And the fact that Jonathan would screen clips in the bus while driving by the locations -- I haven't taken a tour like that before."

Local tourism officials welcome the movie tours as an extension of the local film business, which they count among the city's growing visitor assets.

"When a tourist comes to the city and sees Matthew McConaughey or Jessica Alba, it supports the idea that New Orleans is an exciting place to be," said Jennifer Day-Sully, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Tracey Gold stars in spider drama "Arachnoquake" (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Former "Growing Pains" star Tracey Gold is the latest '80s icon to sign on for an impossibly silly Syfy drama: "Arachnoquake," which somehow doesn't have an exclamation point in the title, will find her battling giant albino spiders unleashed by earthquakes.

Also appearing in the TV movie are be Bug Hall ("The Little Rascals"), Ethan Phillips (" Star Trek: Voyager" ) and Edward Furlong, who is somehow listed only fourth in Syfy's news release despite starring in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

A production of Active Entertainment, "Arachnoquake" is directed by Griff Furst, who also directed "Swamp Shark," which had us at "swamp" and then sealed the deal with "shark." It was one of the highest-rated Syfy Saturday Original Movies of 2011.

"Arachnoquake" (seriously? No exclamation point?) airs next year.

LeBron Overpowers Mavs In NBA Finals Rematch

DALLAS -- While Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks were on the court celebrating the championship they won over LeBron James and Dwyane Wade last season, the Miami Heat were gathered in another part of the building.

It wasn't because they dreaded watching the ceremony, they insisted.

They were simply getting ready to show everyone why they are favored to win it all this season.

James and Wade led a series of scoring waves that put Miami ahead by 35 points midway through the third quarter, the lead peaking when James soared to the rim and tipped an alley-oop pass to Wade so he could have the dunk instead. The game was essentially over then, although the Mavs reserves fueled a late rally that made the final score look close, 105-94.

"We tried to play aggressive," James said. "We're a focused team. We had a great training camp. We came in with the same mindset we had at practice, use our speed and play with mental focus."

James finished with 37 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Wade had 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Miami scored at least 30 points in each of the first three quarters.

"Celebration or not, we had a game plan and implemented it," Wade said. "We came out and played a good game."

Maybe the pregame festivities left the Mavs emotionally drained because they were down by 15 after one quarter and 21 at halftime. They then gave up 14 straight points early in the third quarter.

The blowout had less to do with an emotional hangover and more to do with exposing the slow process of breaking in a new rotation. Dallas lost center Tyson Chandler and backup point guard J.J. Barea and added guard Vince Carter, do-it-all Lamar Odom and backup guard Delonte West.

"We're going to have to forge an identity with this team; it's a different team," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's work, and it's going to take honesty, and it's not going to be easy."

Carter took Dallas' first two shots, an 18-footer and a layup. Both missed. West started the second half in his place and finished with 10 points. Carter had five points, two rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes.

Odom ? the NBA's reigning Sixth Man of the Year, who was acquired from the Lakers a few weeks ago for merely a trade exception ? entered to a standing ovation, and got fans roaring again when he made a 3-pointer that tied the game at 11. He missed his next five shots before getting ejected midway through the third quarter, but still left to loud cheers. He had four points and four rebounds in 13 minutes.

"We've got to get better and it will take a little time to get better," Odom said.

Jason Terry sparked a Dallas rally, that started after Odom was tossed, and wound up leading Dallas with 23 points. Nowitzki scored 21 in three quarters. Shawn Marion scored 12 and broke the pinky finger on his left hand.

NBA Commissioner David Stern attended the game and took part in the banner raising ceremony. Fans greeted him with boos, perhaps showing disgust over the lockout that delayed the start of the season from Nov. 1 and shrunk the season by 16 games.

Fans had plenty more to cheer, such as Terry proclaiming, "Thirty-one years you waited ? 31 years! ? to call your team a champion, ladies and gentlemen. A champion!"

Nowitzki, Terry, Jason Kidd and many more players, coaches and staff each got a strand to yank as part of the unveiling of the banner at court level. Nowitzki and Kidd seemed awed as they watched it rise to the rafters. They couldn't take their eyes off it ? or didn't want to.

Championship tie-ins were everywhere, from the Mavs' warmup jackets proclaiming them the 2011 NBA Champions to jerseys featuring a patch of the championship trophy, with the words on the front and back of their jerseys all outlined in gold. Terry even wore gold high-tops.

But Dallas was more style than substance, especially compared to a Miami team that returns the core of its rotation.

The Heat scored 18 points in the paint in the first quarter, while the Mavs scored a total of 17 that period ? none in the paint. Both Miami's 18 and Dallas' 0 are an indication of how badly the Mavs will miss Chandler.

Miami went on a 12-0 run late in the first quarter, a 15-1 spurt in the second quarter, then the 14-0 binge in the third period. At the end of that final surge, James made a spin move to free himself for a 17-foot jumper off the glass, then followed with his alley-oop tip to Wade.

"It was showtime," said Heat point guard Mario Chalmers, who had the initial pass to James. "That comes from playing a whole season together last year and working out during the offseason with each other."

NOTES: Miami had lost 14 straight regular-season games to the Mavericks and nine straight in Dallas, dating to March 2004. ... The Mavericks were sold out for the 400th straight regular-season game, extending their NBA record. ... The championship-defense-opening rout might seem familiar for Heat fans. After Miami beat Dallas in the 2006 finals, the Heat were clobbered 108-66 at home by the Bulls in the 2006-07 opener. ... The Mavericks had fun connecting Christmas and their championship, such as a parody of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" that kept coming back to the line "and a Larry O'Brien tro-phy." ...The Heat showed their holiday spirit by wearing green laces with their red shoes.

US weighs Yemen leader's travel request

The Obama administration is considering whether to allow Yemen's outgoing president Ali Abdullah Saleh into the United States for medical treatment as fresh violence and political tensions flare in the strategically important Middle-East nation.

A senior administration official says Saleh's office requested that he be allowed to receive specialized treatment in the U.S. for injuries sustained in a June attack on his compound.

Saleh announced Saturday that he was leaving for the U.S. in order to help calm tensions in his country following a fresh wave of violence, but he said his travel was not for medical treatment.

Saleh's presence in Yemen has angered many there, who say he wants to continue to wield his influence despite agreeing to transfer power following months of protests.

"The request for approval for President Saleh to travel to the United States is currently under consideration. The only reason that travel to the United States by President Saleh would be approved would be for legitimate medical treatment," said the senior Obama administration official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The official said Saleh's office recently contacted the U.S. embassy in Sanaa to say the president plans to leave Yemen soon and wants to get specialized care in the United States related to injuries he sustained in a June assassination attempt that forced him into hospital in Saudi Arabia.

On Saturday, just hours after his forces killed nine people who had demanded he be tried for the killings of demonstrators over the past year, Saleh said he would leave for the United States and give way to a successor. He did not say when he would depart.

Saleh: 'I'm fine'
The Yemeni leader said he would undergo some medical tests but characterized his intended trip as one of temporary exile.

"I will go to the United States. Not for treatment, because I'm fine, but to get away from attention, cameras, and allow the unity government to prepare properly for elections," he said.

"I'll be there for several days, but I'll return because I won't leave my people and comrades who have been steadfast for 11 months," Saleh said.

Increasing bloodshed and political uncertainty in Yemen is a major concern to its neighbor Saudi Arabia and Saleh's former supporters in Washington, who worry the country's al Qaeda wing could gain control of key oil shipping routes in the chaos.

President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism official John Brennan called Yemen's acting leader on Sunday to emphasize the need for Yemeni forces "to show maximum restraint" when dealing with demonstrations, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement issued in Hawaii where Obama is vacationing.

In his phone conversation with Yemeni Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Brennan also called for all sides in Yemen's political transition to avoid "provocative acts that could spur further violence."

Hadi told Brennan he has launched an investigation into the deaths and injuries that occurred and said he would do his utmost to prevent further bloodshed, Earnest said, adding both officials agreed it was important to stick to the transition path leading to the February 21, 2012, presidential election.

"Mr. Brennan told Vice President Hadi that the United States remains a strong and fervent supporter of the Yemeni people in their quest to realize their richly deserved aspirations for security, political stability, representative government, and economic prosperity," Earnest said.

Hadi on Sunday urged Saleh's foes and loyalists to commit to a truce.

Ford's Focus Electric hits the production line, could be yours in January

After waiting eleven months just to profess your intent, what's another two before taking delivery of your Focus Electric? That's right, electric hatchback lovers, your pre-ordered chariots just went into production and will be rolling out of Ford's Michigan plant come January. Despite the looming delivery, the automaker has yet to reveal its official range. AutoBlog Green muses that with its 23-kWh pack it'll probably be good for about 70 miles -- comparable to its slightly cheaper competition, the Nissan Leaf, which eked out 73 miles from its 24-kWh juice box in official testing. Will Ford spill the beans before CES 2012? Definitively maybe, but in the meantime hit the source to see a bevy of snaps from the production line -- go on, with some luck it might just be yours.

Early rally fades; stock market down for the week

World stocks were buoyed Friday, Dec. 16, by improving U.S. economic indicators and the expected approval in Italy of an austerity plan intended to get the country's finances under control. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

An early rally faded on the stock market Friday, leaving indexes down about 3 percent for the week as worries resurfaced about a breakup of the euro.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion plunged after slashing its forecast for holiday sales. The IPO of online game maker Zynga Inc. didn't live up to its lofty expectations. The stock lost 5 percent on its first day of trading

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 2 points. It was up as many as 99 points in the morning after the Italian government won a confidence vote on austerity measures. That gain evaporated around midday after Fitch warned that it might downgrade the debt of Italy, Spain and four other countries that use the euro. After markets closed, Moody's downgraded Belgium's debt two notches and said more cuts were possible.

Materials and industrial companies rose, signaling that traders expect the U.S. economic recovery to remain on track. Utilities, health care and consumer staples companies lagged the market as traders sold stocks that are considered to be safer when the economy is weak.

The Dow Jones industrial average broke a three-day slump Thursday on news that claims for unemployment benefits plunged last week and measures of manufacturing in the Northeast improved dramatically. The Dow lost 360 points over the first three days of the week as investors questioned whether Europe's agreement to closer coordinate fiscal policy would be enough to save the euro from a catastrophic breakup.

Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors, said investors are holding back until they get a "firmer resolution" to Europe's debt morass and more progress in Washington on reforming entitlements, balancing the budget and getting the country growing again. "Right, now we don't have anything to offer them," he said.

Some analysts believe nervousness about Europe this fall and winter pushed stock prices too far. Investment adviser Uri Landesman, president of Platinum Partners, expects stocks to rise into next year because of the growing likelihood that economic news and European headlines will remain positive.

"The odds are, the news is going to be better than the market is discounting," Landesman said. He said the market is near the low end of its recent trading range, and a dose of positive news could set off a mini-rally. Any market moves next week could be sharp as trading volume thins out before the Christmas holiday, Landesman said.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 2.42 points at 11,866.93.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 3.91, or 0.3 percent, to 1,219.66. The Nasdaq composite index rose 14.32, or 0.6 percent, to 2,555.33 The Dow is down 2.6 percent for the week; the S&P 2.8 percent. The Nasdaq lost 3.5 percent.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note plunged to 1.85 percent from 1.93 percent earlier Friday after the government said consumer prices were unchanged last month, suggesting that inflation remains low. Low inflation makes bonds more attractive because it doesn't diminish the buying power of the fixed return a bond provides over time.

Seven of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index rose, with the only declines showing up in health care, consumer staples, and utilities. The biggest gains were in energy, materials and industrial companies. U.S. factories in some regions have had higher shipments and orders month, according to two surveys released Thursday. Materials companies are benefiting from soaring commodity prices.

Research In Motion Ltd. plummeted 11 percent after the company said late Thursday that new phones seen as critical to its future will be delayed until late next year. RIM also is taking a big loss on unsold tablet computers and predicted that its BlackBerry sales will fall sharply during the holiday sales season.

Zynga, which makes "Farmville" and other popular games, fell 5 percent to $9.50 in its first day of trading on the Nasdaq. The initial public offering was priced late Thursday at $10 per share, raising $1 billion. That means the San Francisco company can boast the biggest Internet IPO since Google Inc. first offered shares in 2004.

Among the other companies making big moves:

? New York-area cable TV provider Cablevision Systems Corp. plunged 9 percent following the sudden departure of its chief operating officer, Tom Rutledge.

? Adobe Systems Inc. jumped 6.6 percent after the software maker reported earnings and revenues that were far better than what analysts had expected. Analyst Walter Pritchard at Citigroup said the quarter was a "blow-out when most expected weakness."

Perry double dips state salary and pension (AP)

AUSTIN, Texas ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a double-dipper, collecting a salary and retirement benefits simultaneously.

A personal financial disclosure form that presidential candidates are required to file shows that Perry is collecting his $7,700 monthly state pension. That is allowable under state law, using a complicated formula.

Perry's salary as governor is roughly $133,000.

Collecting retirement benefits while drawing a state salary will likely expose Perry to criticism from those who complain that public sector employees are too generously compensated.

Perry's financial disclosure form was made public Friday by the Federal Election Commission.

He reported a net worth of at least $1.3 million and an annual income of $290,000.

Cutter: It's 'tough,' but Obama's still fighting (Politico)

President Barack Obama?s scorecard for 2011 is a study in extremes: stunning foreign policy achievements matched by considerable domestic defeats.

The president oversaw the killing of Osama bin Laden, wound down the war in Iraq and helped topple a dictator in Libya. But his successes abroad couldn?t help him back home, where Congress largely blocked his agenda and a lethargic economy drove two-thirds of Americans in many polls to say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

With Washington nearing a legislative standstill as the 2012 presidential campaign ramps up, the focus of this White House over the next year will be modest: protecting and implementing what Obama has already achieved and pressing Congress to act on his jobs measures.

Stephanie Cutter, a deputy senior adviser to the president who departed the White House last month to work on Obama?s campaign, sat down for an interview with POLITICO to discuss the administration?s successes, setbacks and surprises over the past year.

It was a tough year for the president, but let?s start on the positive side of the ledger. What would you point to as the administration?s top policy achievements?

He kept his promise on Iraq. By the end of the year, American troops will be out of Iraq.

We doubled fuel-economy standards, which is a historic accomplishment ? the largest single reduction in oil imports in history. ... [and] which haven?t been touched for 20 years. Not only does that save consumers thousands of dollars in fuel costs, it?s a significant decrease in greenhouse gases and it decreases our import of foreign oil.

We achieved historic trade agreements. South Korea alone will have more of an impact than nine past trade agreements. It?s been a long time since America has been able to put some of these things in place, and, as the president says, he wants to see Fords and Chryslers sold over in South Korea. I think the American people are soon going to see that.

The killing of Osama bin Laden and other key leaders is a major accomplishment of this president. ... He took some risks. Had the raid on the bin Laden compound gone badly, it would have been a huge political problem for this president, but he stuck to it, remained focused and ultimately we got him.

When we announced that we were sending troops over to Libya as part of a NATO alliance, the president received a tremendous amount of criticism, particularly from Congress and from some conservative foreign policy experts. This is another example of the president persevering, sticking to his strategy, pursuing what he believes is right, albeit not popular, and we achieved our goals.

Jupiter and the Moon to Show Off in Tuesday's Night Sky (SPACE.com)

As darkness falls tomorrow (Dec. 6), check out the east-southeast sky.?You'll see a bright waxing gibbous moon, nearly 90 percent illuminated, and shining brilliantly to the lower right of the moon will be a brilliant silvery "star" gleaming with a steady glow.

That's not a star, though, but the "king of the planets," Jupiter.?

The moon and Jupiter will be closest together?during the afternoon, and they will be slowly separating during the overnight hours of tomorrow and Wednesday morning.? During the evening they'll be separated by about 5 or 6 degrees (for comparison, your clenched fist held at arm's length measures about 10 degrees and the moon moves across the sky at about its own diameter each hour).

Jupiter remains a bold light high in the east-southeast at nightfall.??This week it?doesn't set in the west until around 3:30 a.m. local time.?

Although brighter than any nighttime star, Jupiter blazes less fiercely now than in previous months.?One glance toward the southwest?before 6:30 p.m. local time will readily show that Venus outshines it.? Jupiter appears to be levitating in front of the sparse stars of eastern Pisces, filling this region of the sky with overbearing brightness.?

What kind of telescopic observation can be made now?? Almost any kind.? From mid-northern latitudes you could even watch a full rotation of Jupiter, with the cloud features of every longitude displayed, during a single nightlong vigil. And as always, a fascinating dance of Jupiter's four large satellites will await viewers on any night who watch with a small telescope or even steadily held binoculars. [Video: Top 10 Amateur Telescopes]

As darkness falls over the eastern United States tomorrow, you'll see two of Jupiter's moons ? Ganymede and Europa ? on one side of the planet, while?a third, Callisto, hovers by itself on the other side.?

As the evening progresses, notice how Ganymede and Europa will gradually pull away from Jupiter, but then at 8:21 p.m. EST (5:21 p.m. PST), a fourth satellite (Io) will emerge from Jupiter's shadow and l appear on the side of Jupiter occupied by Callisto.?Slowly, as tomorrow night wears on, Io will become easier to see as it moves away from Jupiter and toward Callisto.?

Keep in mind that during this time,?Jupiter's distance from Earth is increasing, from 34.8 light-minutes now to?37.7 light-minutes by the end of December (a light-minute is the distance light can travel in a minute ? about 11 million miles, or 18 million kilometers).?The apparent size of?Jupiter's disk is therefore shrinking too; in fact, it will be nearly 13 percent smaller by year's end compared to?when it was at opposition to the sun in late October.?

Nonetheless, Jupiter will continue to be a great target for those who might acquire binoculars or a telescope for the holidays over this upcoming winter season.

George McGovern hospitalized after fall in SD

(AP) ? Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern was being treated at a hospital in South Dakota after falling and hitting his head on the pavement outside a library bearing his name.

McGovern's daughter Ann McGovern said her father was to be treated at a Sioux Falls hospital after being flown by helicopter from Mitchell, S.D., where a live C-SPAN interview was to take place at the Dakota Wesleyan University's McGovern Library on Friday.

"He had just walked from home to the center. He lives literally just across the street," Ann McGovern told The Associated Press.

McGovern has lived in St. Augustine, Fla., since 2008 but also has a home in Mitchell.

Friends and faculty who had gathered at the library for the C-SPAN taping said McGovern fell at about 5:15 p.m. ? less than two hours before the program began. A former South Dakota senator, McGovern, 89, was "bleeding profusely" but was conscious and talking as he was taken from the university by ambulance, said Donald Simmons, dean of the College of Public Service.

Ann McGovern was with her father before he was taken to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, but she wasn't sure how serious the injury was. Hospital officials said no new information was available late Friday night.

University President Robert Duffett said McGovern had been excited to take part in the live C-SPAN program called "The Contenders," which focuses on failed presidential candidates who changed the landscape of American politics." McGovern lost his 1972 challenge against President Richard Nixon, who eventually resigned amid the Watergate scandal.

Duffett said he had coffee with McGovern just hours before the fall and that McGovern was returning to the campus to grab dinner with faculty before the interview.

McGovern was entering a side door when he "tripped and fell and hit his head hard," said Duffett, audibly frazzled. "It's just one of those things. He's made that walk many times before."

McGovern has an office inside the library named for both him and his late wife, Eleanor.

Ann McGovern said the injury was unrelated to her father's hospitalization in late October for exhaustion. She was with her father was he was being readied to be taken to Avera McKennan Hospital, but she wasn't sure how serious the injury was.

C-SPAN went ahead and aired the segment on McGovern, with program host Amity Shlaes interviewing political experts and journalists to analyze McGovern's ill-fated campaign. Shlaes said on air that McGovern had taken "a spill" and wasn't able to be on the program as planned, but she said he was fine.

McGovern was elected to his first of three terms in the Senate in 1962. Though he later lost the presidential race to Nixon, he continued to distinguish himself during his political career and was a lifelong advocate for U.S. and world food programs.

Even unconsciously, sound helps us see

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2011) ? "Imagine you are playing ping-pong with a friend. Your friend makes a serve. Information about where and when the ball hit the table is provided by both vision and hearing. Scientists have believed that each of the senses produces an estimate relevant for the task (in this example, about the location or time of the ball's impact) and then these votes get combined subconsciously according to rules that take into account which sense is more reliable. And this is how the senses interact in how we perceive the world.

However, our findings show that the senses of hearing and vision can also interact at a more basic level, before they each even produce an estimate," says Ladan Shams, a UCLA professor of psychology, and the senior author of a new study appearing in the December issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science. "If we think of the perceptual system as a democracy where each sense is like a person casting a vote and all votes are counted (albeit with different weights) to reach a decision, what our study shows is that the voters talk to one another and influence one another even before each casts a vote."

"The senses affect each other in many ways," says cognitive neuroscientist Robyn Kim. There are connections between the auditory and visual portions of the brain and at the cognitive level. When the information from one sense is ambiguous, another sense can step in and clarify or ratify the perception. Now, for the first time, Kim, Megan Peters, and Ladan Shams, working at the University of California Los Angeles, have shown behavioral evidence that this interplay happens in the earliest workings of perception -- not just before that logical decision-making stage, but before the pre-conscious combination of sensory information.

To demonstrate that one sense can affect another even before perception, the researchers showed 63 participants a bunch of dots on a screen, in two phases with a pause between them. In one phase, the dots moved around at random; in the other, some proportion moved together from right to left. The participants had to indicate in which phase the dots moved together horizontally. In experiment 1, the subjects were divided into three groups. While they looked at the dots, one group heard sound moving in the same direction as the right-to-left dots, and stationary sound in the random phase. A second group heard the same right-to-left sound in both phases. The third group heard the identical sound in both phases, but it moved in the opposite direction of the dots. In the second and third conditions, because the sound was exactly the same in both phases, it added no cognitively useful information about which phase had the leftward-moving dots. In experiment 2, each participant experienced trials in all three conditions.

The results: All did best under the first condition -- when the sound moved only in the leftward-motion phase. The opposite-moving sound neither enhanced nor worsened the visual perception. But surprisingly, the uninformative sound -- the one that traveled leftward both with the leftward-moving dots and also when the dots moved randomly -- helped people correctly perceive when the dots were moving from one side to the other. Hearing enhanced seeing, even though the added sense couldn't help them make the choice.

The study, says Kim, should add to our appreciation of the complexity of our senses. "Most of us understand that smell affects taste. But people tend to think that what they see is what they see and what they hear is what they hear." The findings of this study offer "further evidence that, even at a non-conscious level, visual and auditory processes are not so straightforward," she says. "Perception is actually a very complex thing affected by many factors."

"This study shows that at least in regards to perception of moving objects, hearing and sight are deeply intertwined, to the degree that even when sound is completely irrelevant to the task, it still influences the way we see the world," Shams says.

The article is entitled, "How adding non-informative sound improves performance on a visual task."

Walgreen, others sue Pfizer over depression drug (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Pfizer Inc and Teva Pharmceutical Industries Ltd were sued by Walgreen Co and four other large retailers, accused of violating U.S. antitrust law by conspiring to keep generic versions of a popular antidepressant off the shelves.

Walgreen, Kroger Co, Safeway Inc, Supervalu Inc and HEB Grocery Co accused Pfizer's Wyeth unit of conducting an "overarching anticompetitive scheme" to prevent and delay the approval and marketing of generic versions of the prescription drug Effexor XR, causing them to overpay.

In a complaint made public on Thursday by the U.S. District Court in Trenton, New Jersey, the retailers said Wyeth kept generic equivalents off the market for at least two years after its marketing exclusivity for the original Effexor compound patent lapsed in June 2008.

They said Wyeth did this by obtaining fraudulent patents, engaging in sham litigation, and entering a price-fixing agreement with Teva to delay cheaper generic equivalents from reaching the market.

"As a result of defendants' exclusionary conduct, generic versions of Effexor XR were illegally blocked from the marketplace from June 2008 through at least June 2010," when U.S. sales of the drug topped $2.5 billion, the 78-page complaint said. Pfizer bought Wyeth in 2009.

Some of the retailers' claims had been assigned to them by three large drug wholesalers: AmerisourceBergen Corp, Cardinal Health Inc and McKesson Corp. A sixth plaintiff is American Sales Co, another wholesaler.

Effexor XR is used to treat depression and three anxiety disorders. Its chemical name is venlafaxine hydrochloride.

"Pfizer categorically denies the claims asserted in the plaintiffs' complaints," spokesman Christopher Loder said in an emailed statement. "Wyeth obtained its patents protecting Effexor XR lawfully, and the company intends to defend itself vigorously against these claims."

Teva spokeswoman Denise Bradley said that company believes the lawsuit has no merit.

Pfizer's global sales of Effexor XR totaled $537 million from January to September, down 64 percent from a year earlier, reflecting increased generic competition.

Pfizer is based in New York, while Wyeth has operations in Madison, New Jersey. Walgreen is based in Deerfield, Illinois; Kroger in Cincinnati; Safeway in Pleasanton, California; Supervalu in Eden Prairie, Minnesota; independently-owned HEB in San Antonio; and American Sales in Lancaster, New York.

The case is Walgreen Co et al v. Wyeth Inc et al, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, No. 11-06958.

Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant again

>>> hey, everybody, it's thirsty thursday october 6 , 2011 . we are keeping up with the kardashian. we have each member of the famous family on to fill in for kathie lee . today is kourtney 's turn.

>> this is fun.

>> what do you think so far? you're in the chair.

>> i asked if you were still breast-feeding.

>> no. mason is 22 months. i think i stopped early because my sisters said it's time, it's time. i did 14 months, but i think next time i would do two years.

>> why?

>> i miss they think they know him.

>> there he is. he was here with your mother.

>> she jumped on his bed 6:30 a.m . and woke him up. then we had a late dinner. we went to "the lion king " last night.

>> did he love it?

>> loved it. he sat for an hour and a half mesmerized. didn't make a peep. unbelievable. he never sat that still ever. he's so active. we left at halftime because i was --

>> halftime.

>> whatever. intermission. i thought he probably wouldn't sit still.

>> why aren't you guys married because everyone asks you that all the time. he said ask you.

>> oh, come on. of course he said that.

>> he was going to and you didn't want to. who doesn't want to get married?

>> i don't. i think we both just feel like it's not the right time. i don't know when the right time is or what that means. i think just how our relationship has evolved and then i got pregnant. i didn't just want to go get married because i was like, if i wasn't pregnant i wouldn't go get married. i don't know.

>> so why do it now.

>> for us, and we are in a great place. we have such a happy family . i'm just like a piece of paper to me doesn't make our relationship any better or worse than anyone else 's.

>> i can't, my butt.

>> when you see that stuff do you laugh?

>> we definitely laugh. then i'm also like kourtney is the shortest one.

>> are you really the smarter one?

>> no. i went to college and graduated. my sisters didn't -- well, khloe didn't go. khloe did home school . i don't think that makes you smarter or not.

>> you do have that sort of, that is a tag you get of the group, i think.

>> i'll take it.

>> we are going to give you a little quiz about kris . the big wedding is coming up sunday, october 9th .

>> yes.

>> i'm going to give you a kris humphries quiz. your mom did the worse. she didn't get one question about kris right. khloe goes three and bruce got them all right. now it's up to you.

>> go, bruce . we always say bruce doesn't listen.

>> for the new jersey nets, kris humphries wears which number?

>> 43.

>> you're right.

>> oh, stop.

>> you'reness going to know this one. i don't think khloe knows it. what is kris humphries ' shoe size ?

>> 14.

>> not exactly. 12. kris turned down a scholarship offer from which university, duke, georgetown, indiana or kentucky?

>> kentucky.

>> duke.

>> oh, my goodness.

>> anyway, so there you have it.

>> i got one right.

>> you got one right. bruce knows the most. then we'll ask kim . she may not know some of these tomorrow.

>> that would be amazing if she didn't.

>> you guys are big tweeters. i noticed today you were tweeting about steve jobs and his passing. isn't it funny how many lives this one man affected? he's almost the thomas edison of our time.

>> he is.

>> it feels like that, doesn't it?

>> yeah. i was reading this morning a lot of his quotes. those are quotes that will live on forever. and, like, inspire people. just such an incredible man.

>> if you guys are at home and you want to be inspired, go to injure stamford university 2005 commencement speech. it is a home run . it will inspire you. think about him giving the best he's got. "you cannot connect the dots looking forward . you can only connect them looking backwards . so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. you have to trust in something, your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. this approach has never let me down and has made all the difference in my life." that is such a great statement. sometimes when you're venturing off into a new business, you want to be sure it's going to work.

>> yeah. you have to trust it in. i was reading another one of his quotes this morning about work and how you have to love what you do. it's so true. he says, don't give up, don't settle. you want to love what you do.

>> find your passion.

>> because that takes up so much of your life.

>> i love that. we love a lot of things in our life and we love music on the show. it's that day where we get to pick our favorite songs. okay. i picked one and i know you picked one. because we're being kind of all techie today, we have these cute little speakers. mine is an old school song . i hope you know it. it may be too old. it's by a guy named montel and it's called "this is how we do it." go.

>> this is one of scott's favorite songs.

>> what?

>> yes. is it my turn?

>> not yet. this is how we do it it's friday night

>> this is what you put on when you're going out?

>> yes.

>> this is the getting ready song. i love it. and i feel all right the party is here on the west side

>> you dance. i dance, but he's outside having a cigar.

>> here's yours. this is you.

>> oh, yeah. kanye west and jaycee. this is a song you turn up in your car so loud.

>> there are lyrics we can't play.

>> this is the radio version . this is what we blast in the car, me and khloe , and we go crazy. i know when it says i love you so good i call paparazzi on myself

>> when we find it, we'll crank it up. here is "okay." we do "okay" magazine every week. the question today, is it okay to bribe your kids? kathie lee says bribing is a bad idea but encouraging to do the right thing is a necessity. i say, sure it's okay. parents have a lot on their plates. lighten the load if it takes a little incentive to have your kids eat their veggies off their plate. what do you think?

>> i think parents, too often, just say no without giving another option, which i'm not saying it always has to be like a bribe, but you need to show them something else. don't do this, but you should do this instead. or if you're maybe trying to get them to do something like eat your vegetables and maybe say, if you eat your vegetables, you can have a cookie after or something.

>> that's a bribe.

>> it is a bribe.

>> so it's okay sometimes.

>> i try to not do it as much as i can because i know i have grand parents and sisters and uncles, all these people that are going to be doing it.

>> we should point out "lucky" magazine. they might be confused because they have three versions out. they have the kim , the khloe and the kourtney . all three. are you guys competitive like who is on the most magazines?

>> yeah. there is a contest. whoever wins gets a new pair of shoes.
