Despite Economic Gloom, Online and Offline Gaming is Booming in ...

TA 'XBIEX, Malta--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Australia and Asia are experiencing dramatic growth in both their online and offline gaming sectors, announce Gaming Club. In a report issued by the long-established online gaming site and IBIS, Australia is estimated to see a 3.3% gambling profit spurt in 2012 alone, with online poker and sports betting continuing to drive revenue.

In a country where sports betting is legal, and sports are a much-loved national pastime, sports betting has contributed substantially to the growth of the online gaming sector over the past decade, with revenue growing to more than $400 million. However, poker and online poker retain their leading share of gambling revenues in the country, with 60% of total Australian gaming revenue expected to come from poker in 2012.

Elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, business is also booming. In a recent report published by market research firm yStats.com, online gaming revenues in Southeast Asia are expected to more than double between 2011 and 2015. Singapore, Macau and South Korea, where more than half of all inhabitants play online gaming, are at the forefront of the boom.

Technological advances have helped boost online revenues, with users now able to participate in sports betting and casino gaming via mobile, and increasingly online, with an increase in online casino sites and associated advertising.

In Asia, both offline gaming and tourism sectors have also seen rapid growth, through an increase in casino resorts in the area. Singapore is seen as a particularly promising prospective market. After its government legalised gambling in 2009, LVS and Genting Singapore generated revenues of more than $6 billion there in 2011.

Macau, which has now overtaken Las Vegas to become the largest gaming city in the world today, is the only part of China where land-based gambling has been legalised.

Further to this, MGM Resorts International in conjunction with Asian Coast Development is set to open its first integrated resort in Vietnam in 2013. At a time of global economic uncertainty, major casino operators are keener than ever to establish themselves in this rapid growth area.

European leaders' breakthrough defied expectations

(AP) ? Europe's leaders finally rose to the challenge Friday, backing bold ideas to help weak countries and frail banks ravaged by a debt crisis that has crippled economic growth and threatened the global financial system.

Markets roared their approval after leaders of the 27 European Union countries agreed on an aggressive plan to fix the financial crisis.

For the first time in 19 summits since the start of the crisis, the EU leaders declared they would:

? Centralize regulation of European banks and, if necessary, bail them out directly, instead of funneling loans through governments that already have too much debt.

? Ease borrowing costs on Italy and Spain, the euro region's third- and fourth-largest economies.

? Stop mandating painful budget cuts to every country in need of emergency financial aid.

?Tie their budgets, currency and governments more tightly.

The decisions made at the EU summit in Brussels won't end the crisis that has gripped Europe for nearly three years. Plenty of questions remain about how the bank bailouts would work, whether there's enough money committed to rescue banks and governments and whether impoverished, indebted Greece will be forced out of the 17-nation euro club.

But for EU leaders who have consistently underwhelmed their exasperated publics and nervous financial markets, Friday's efforts marked a breakthrough.

The prime minister of Ireland ? one of the five eurozone countries that have required emergency funds ? said the plans marked a "seismic shift in European policy." British Prime Minister David Cameron said that "for the first time in some time we have actually seen steps ... to get ahead of the game."

There was an immediate sign that Europe's latest plan was easing fear in financial markets: The cost for the troubled government of Spain to borrow fell dramatically. The interest rate, or yield, on the country's 10-year bonds fell by more than half a percentage point, to 6.34 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average recorded its second-biggest gain of the year, and stocks advanced even further in Europe ? in strong and weak countries alike. The benchmark stock index in Germany rose 4.3 percent, by far its best performance this year. Germany has the biggest economy in Europe, and a warm reaction there was a crucial sign of approval for the plan. Prices for oil and other commodities shot higher, another sign that the plan may remove a big barrier to a healthier economy.

At first it looked like the summit would produce little more than a modest plan to stimulate growth in Europe. But Italy and Spain, whose borrowing costs have soared to dangerous levels, refused to sign off on the $150 billion spending plan unless something was done to ease their financial burdens.

After an all-night standoff, the leaders agreed to expand the use of Europe's bailout funds ? and do so without imposing strict austerity measures on countries that are meeting existing pledges to control spending. The bailout money could be used to buy bonds to drive down a country's borrowing costs. Or it could be loaned directly to troubled banks, which EU leaders said would help break "the vicious cycle" in which weak banks and weak governments threaten to drag each other down.

Previously, European leaders insisted that the two bailout funds be used only to rescue governments ? like Ireland, Portugal and Greece. If money was going to be used for troubled banks, it had to first go to a government. But that added to the debt on a government's books because it was responsible for repaying the money.

The bids to rescue banks ended up raising fears about the ailing governments; Spain's borrowing costs rose dramatically two weeks ago after the eurozone countries agreed to lend it $125 billion to rescue its banks.

The EU also called for a single regulator ? probably the European Central Bank ? to oversee Europe's banks. Currently, banks are regulated by their national governments and some countries have been slow to recognize loan problems and shut down their worst banks.

As part of a broad "banking union," the new regulator will likely get power to close failing banks if their national regulators won't do it. The plan is also expected to include deposit insurance across Europe. Individual European countries now insure bank deposits within their borders. But bank failures could overwhelm those national funds.

The bank overhaul is supposed to be completed by the end of the year.

The leaders said they were committed to linking their countries closer together economically and politically, but didn't discuss how. Such integration would likely require countries to give up some of their taxing and spending powers to a European budget authority.

Most analysts cheered the EU plans but worried about the questions left unanswered. And they said the bailout funds are too small to handle the tasks that could be thrown at them.

Europe's two bailout funds have a combined $625 billion in lending power; up to $125 billion of that is already committed to helping Spain bail out its banks. The remaining $500 billion looks small compared with $3.1 trillion in Spanish and Italian bonds outstanding.

The solution hovering in the background, say some economists, is the European Central Bank. The ECB could buy any amount of government bonds, backed if need be by the bank's theoretically limitless power to create money. So far the bank has been unwilling to take this step, which could violate its mandate to fight inflation and a ban on central bank financing of national governments. The ECB's next policy meeting is Thursday in Frankfurt.

The summit deal leaves out crucial details of just how any bank bailouts would work. Would bank creditors have to take a loss on their investments, or would taxpayers foot the whole bill? The deal didn't specify.

If the banking regulator and a rescue fund take ownership stakes in failed banks, manage those stakes in the taxpayer interest while forcing losses on shareholders and creditors, it could be positive, said Clemens Fuest, an expert in public finance at Oxford University's Said Business School.

Otherwise, simply charging taxpayers could be "a huge burden on growth in Europe for a very long time," Clemens said.

Chinese astronauts return to earth

?Females have a harder time adjusting to gravity than males,? said a commentator on China Central Television. ?Of course their muscles are less strong?.

The three astronauts were then taken to Beijing by helicopter for a medical assessment.

"The Tiangong [module] was our home in the sky, it is cosy and comfortable," said Ms Liu, as the three astronauts sat in folding chairs just outside the landing capsule. "I am proud of my country".

"It feels so good to have my feet on the ground and to be home," said Mr Liu

The crew successfully carried out China?s first manual space docking, joining their Shenzhou 9 space craft to the orbiting Tiangong-1 module and then entering the module and staying there for most of their 13 day trip.

The manoeuvre, first carried out by the Americans and the Russians in the 1960s, requires a delicate touch: both vessels were moving at thousands of miles per hour around the Earth. It was the main goal of China?s fourth manned space trip; the first mission since a spacewalk in 2008.

There is immense national pride in China for its space programme and Wen Jiabao, the Chinese premier, said the mission had been a triumph of ?new socialism? guided by Hu Jintao, the president. Mr Wen watched the landing from the command centre, and applauded enthusiastically.

As China steps up its exploration of space, the United States has said it will not test a new rocket to take astronauts into space until 2017. Instead, Nasa has begun investing in private firms that will provide commercial space flight services. Russia, the world?s other major space superpower, has said manned missions are no longer a priority.

Earlier this week, the Chinese government said the total cost of its space programme, from 1992 to the end of the next Shenzhou mission, will be around 39 billion yuan (?3.9 billion).

L.A. metal recyclers charged in mishandling of toxic waste

Los Angeles city prosecutors Wednesday took the unusual step of filing criminal charges against the owners of three metal recycling businesses, accusing them of illegally handling hazardous waste and allowing toxic chemicals to be released into storm water.

"These facilities pose a significant threat to human health and the environment," said Patty Bilgin, who heads the Los Angeles city attorney's environmental justice unit. "These are toxic chemicals. We don't know where they are going."

The conditions inspectors found in some of the facilities were "inherently dangerous," Bilgin said. Among other things, the criminal complaint said there were puddles of oil on the ground and stacks of refrigerators and radiators ? which had not been properly drained of hazardous chemicals ? mixed in with scrap metal.

Prosecutors charged Jong Uk Byun, who owns Central Metal on South Alameda Street, with eight misdemeanor counts, including one related to runoff of water contaminated with copper, lead and zinc.

Geovedy and Waihner Cifuentes, owner and manager of CDL Scrap Metal on Mateo Street downtown, were charged with nine counts, including mishandling hazardous waste, illegally discharging polluted water and operating without a permit.

Don Monroe, the owner of C&M Metals on 24th Street, faces 13 similar counts.

If convicted, each business owner could face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and up to a year in jail, prosecutors said.

Waihner Cifuentes said he was taken by surprise. "I did not know. I have not received anything," he said.

He added that after inspectors visited his property earlier this year, "I did everything they told me.... We have everything in order here."

A person answering the phone at Central Metal said "nobody is aware of this" and had no further comment.

Monroe of C&M Metals said the charges "come as a shock" because he thought he had done his best to comply with what regulators asked.

The city attorney's office filed the charges after numerous agencies, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department's hazardous materials division and the regional water board, conducted inspections in February.

Recycling scrap metal ? much of it shipped to factories in Asia ? is a booming business in Central and South Los Angeles, and many environmental groups complain that some outfits violate environmental laws with impunity.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, a mayoral candidate who represents the area where two of the businesses operate, said she hopes the charges send a "loud and clear" message "to any company that chooses to profit before community health that we are watching and will not take these actions lightly."

Liz Crosson, executive director of Santa Monica Baykeeper, an environmental group that has sued several metal recycling operations for violating the federal Clean Water Act, also welcomed the action.

"It's important that polluters be held accountable," she said. "Contributing pollutants like toxic metals to our waterways is a criminal action. "

Her group earlier this month filed a federal lawsuit against C&M Metals accusing it of allowing water contaminated with toxic metal to drain into Ballona Creek.

Advice for Expectant Fathers. Part One - Fatherhood

Advice_for_expectant_fathers_1Pregnant woman is subjected to bursts of anger, mood swings, caprices, caused by hormonal body reconstruction. How should future father behave in this difficult period? Let us see major mistakes in male behavior.

Mistake #1. Man doesn't help his wife
The male is sure that he has done what he needed to do, therefore he never helps his pregnant woman in their house. Male says pregnancy is not a disease and washing dishes is all-female occupation. Wife's complaints on nausea and weakness he calls caprices. He thinks he has right to relax in front of television at the end of the hard working day. Solemn taking away the garbage is the only heroic act which a tired man is able to do. Such male behavior causes scandals. When the wife would have in disputes such powerful argument as increasing belly, the man should take shopping upon himself.

Advice
You will never know what your wife experiences during her pregnancy. You just should understand that habitual household routines became unwieldy for her. It became difficult for her to slave over a hot stove because of high sensitivity to smells and nausea. By preparing dinner, shopping and doing the hoovering you will never drop your manhood.

Mistake #2. Man complains on lack of attention
Future father gets upset when little attention is given to him, so he may be late at work and after each scandal goes to sleep to her mother. Sometimes appears another woman who wants to console an abandoned man. The man demands particular things from his woman ? he demands from her to keep cleanness and coziness at home, to prepare three dishes every day, wear lace lingerie, to smile, to welcome sexual experiments, to pay less attention to personal well-being and instead to pay more attention to the man. Some men don't like to sort things out. After being aggrieved, they leave home without explanations.

Advice
A mature and strong man lives a period of temporal wife's cooling caused by physiological processes. It is a normal thing. Consult the psychologist about this.

Nearly 3 in 10 have no emergency savings

By Allison Linn

Most Americans don't have enough money saved for a rainy day -- or even a cloudy one.

A new?survey from Bankrate.com finds that 28 percent of Americans haven?t saved any money at all to cover their bills in case of a job loss or other disaster.

Only 25 percent of people had six months of savings -- the usual?amount financial experts say you should have socked away for an emergency.

And six months might not even be enough?given how long it?s taken people to find a job these days. The median duration of unemployment was 20 weeks in May, or about five months, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For older Americans it can be much longer.

Another?21?percent said they had some money saved up, but not even enough to cover three months of expenses.

Taken together with those who hadn?t saved at all,?49 percent of people couldn?t go three months without a paycheck. That?s up from 46 percent last year.

Still, the figure is?better than six years ago, when a similar Bankrate.com survey found that 61 percent didn?t have three months of living expenses saved up.

The recession and the weak recovery have been a wake-up call for?many Americans, sparking an increase in savings and a decline in debt.?But recently there have been signs that people are?taking on debt again for things like cars and education, and relying more on their credit cards.

It?s not clear whether that?s by choice or necessity, although Bankrate research did show that about one-third of those?surveyed were less comfortable with their savings than they were a year ago.

The survey was based on telephone interviews with 1,000 Americans.

Black holes as particle detectors

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? Finding new particles usually requires high energies -- that is why huge accelerators have been built, which can accelerate particles to almost the speed of light. But there are other creative ways of finding new particles: At the Vienna University of Technology, scientists presented a method to prove the existence of hypothetical "axions." These axions could accumulate around a black hole and extract energy from it. This process could emit gravity waves, which could then be measured.

Axions are hypothetical particles with a very low mass. According to Einstein, mass is directly related to energy, and therefore very little energy is required to produce axions. "The existence of axions is not proven, but it is considered to be quite likely," says Daniel Grumiller. Together with Gabriela Mocanu he calculated at the Vienna University of Technology (Institute for Theoretical Physics), how axions could be detected.

Astronomically Large Particles

In quantum physics, every particle is described as a wave. The wavelength corresponds to the particle's energy. Heavy particles have small wavelengths, but the low-energy axions can have wavelengths of many kilometers. The results of Grumiller and Mocanu, based on works by Asmina Arvanitaki and Sergei Dubovsky (USA/Russia), show that axions can circle a black hole, similar to electrons circling the nucleus of an atom. Instead of the electromagnetic force, which ties the electrons and the nucleus together, it is the gravitational force which acts between the axions and the black hole.

The Boson-Cloud

However, there is a very important difference between electrons in an atom and axions around a black hole: Electrons are fermions -- which means that two of them can never be in the same state. Axions on the other hand are bosons, many of them can occupy the same quantum state at the same time. They can create a "boson-cloud" surrounding the black hole. This cloud continuously sucks energy from the black hole and the number of axions in the cloud increases.

Sudden Collapse

Such a cloud is not necessarily stable. "Just like a loose pile of sand, which can suddenly slide, triggered by one single additional grain of sand, this boson cloud can suddenly collapse," says Daniel Grumiller. The exciting thing about such a collapse is that this "bose-nova" could be measured. This event would make space and time vibrate and emit gravity waves. Detectors for gravity waves have already been developed, in 2016 they are expected to reach an accuracy at which gravity waves should be unambiguously detected. The new calculations in Vienna show that these gravity waves can not only provide us with new insights about astronomy, they can also tell us more about new kinds of particles.

Review: New MacBook Pro is revolution for eyeballs, raid on wallet

16 hrs.

I didn't think I would care much about a "Retina" display for a laptop. When I'm using my current laptop in a typical way, a?few feet from my face, I can't see the pixels anyhow.?So what would this revolutionary laptop with?pixels that are invisible to the human eye do for me? Turns out,?it bathes my eyeballs in a spa-like warmth the likes of which I haven't felt since I first stared deep into the high-res face of my first iPhone 4.

Don't call me a fanboy for that one. Just do yourself a favor and stare deep at?a Retina display on an iPhone 4 or 4S, or a competing phone with a ridiculously pixel-dense screen, like HTC's Rezound. When you're looking at the right image or picture, it feels like you can see for miles and miles, and it's relaxing. It's easier on the eyes, because your brain doesn't have to reconstruct reality from a pile of bricks. It simply?sees reality.?

And even at arm's length, like on a laptop monitor,?the difference?is clear. When I was browsing the Mac App Store on the new MacBook Pro, I pulled up iPhoto, and in the splash screen there was a mockup iPhoto?screen, and inside that screen were photos. I could see the detail in each of those tiny thumbnails, as if they were 3x5s sitting on a coffee table.

The other thing that I could tell immediately?about the new?screen is that there's far less glare. I have an anti-glare screen on my 2010 MacBook Pro, but colleagues in my office with standard screens live like vampires, shying away from sunlight, fearing reflections in their screens. When you set the new MacBook Pro next to an older model, you can see that Apple has cut down on glare drastically, and that?the visibility is simultaneously increased by newer?LCD technology that makes for better viewing at wider angles.

I'll shut up about the display now, but there's no downplaying its significance ? and the fact that it's a leading inflater of the price of the?newly redesigned MacBook Pro.

Whether you're seriously considering buying in or just curious about the new gold standard in laptops, you have to understand what's revolutionary about the MacBook Pro and why that will sooner or later become standard, at least in Apple's lineup.?Design and technological?innovations like these aren't meant to be kept at the high end. Just as unibody construction, solid-state memory and Thunderbolt interfaces have worked their way down into Apple's full MacBook line, so too will the glories that are today only found the admittedly expensive ? and hard to find ? new?flagship.

Another of these improvements can be heard in the speakers.

When my wife and I travel with the older MacBook Pro, and watch a movie on it?in a hotel room, we strain to hear dialogue. My wife has flat-out?banned the listening of music on that old laptop, too,?because it's so tinny. Well, the new next-gen MacBook Pro may be skinnier, but trust me, the sound coming out of it is a whole lot?fatter. You can really hear midrange and low-end, and when you crank the volume, the sound gets louder, rather than just peaking out in an ear-crushing way.

Under the hood, things get even more advanced. Instead of a hard drive, or even a typical "solid-state drive," where flash memory is stored in a hard-drive-shaped?enclosure, there is just a board that holds the flash memory, ranging from 256GB to 768GB. Flash memory is not cheap, especially the highest-quality kind needed for performance laptops, and that's why there's an?additional "early adopter tax" here:?Since Apple is hardwiring it?in, you have to pay for the internal memory you'll need?now, rather than wait to upgrade later, when the price inevitably?goes down. (Apple will however be offering RAM upgrades for the new MacBook Pro, according to a check of the Apple Store, and corroborated by support documentation.)

Pricey though it is, the benefit of hard-wired flash memory is exceptional performance: The laptop wakes up instantly when you open the lid, and when that lid is closed, your battery doesn't drain. There's a 7-hour battery life, says Apple, and the stand-by time is an incredible 30?days.

(While I wanted to share with you the significance of this laptop, I am not going to go into further?technical testing here. For an excellent technical review, pay a visit to our friends at Laptop, who have all the charts and graphs you'll need to know just how special this thing is.)

There are, of course, things that might not?excite you about the new MacBook Pro. It's not particularly lightweight, for instance. Weighing in at around 4.5 lbs., it's by no means heavier than the typical premium notebook, but it's not a miracle of lightness, either. In fact, because it has a similar weight and footprint to its predecessor, it's easy to forget about its remarkable thinness.

Another thing that might concern some is the lack of a DVD drive, but I am having a hard time remember the last time I even watched?a DVD, let alone burned one. For those still?interested in shiny silver disc handling, there is a $79 USB?SuperDrive, but it shouldn't be considered as a?precautionary purchase, because my guess is that most people won't need it.

"Need." Look at me. What an awful word to use when discussing this marvel.?Aside from visual artists, medical imaging technicians and mineralogists?? the sort of?professionals?for whom this kind of pixel density comes with immediate pay-off,?not to mention a tax write-off?? there's no way this baby is?a "necessity."

It is bragging right upon bragging right, envelope push upon envelope push, and most people who buy it will be doing it for the same reason they would buy a Mercedes-Benz CLS. To experience the height of quality??To fulfill a personal aesthetic hunger? To show off to friends and strangers alike? It makes no difference: The reason is certainly?not to get you to work and back.

So if you do buy this?? assuming all?other financial?obligations to society are covered, or you have more money than you could ever spend in your lifetime?? I say buy the $3,749 configuration. That maxes out the RAM at 16GB, the internal flash memory at 768GB and the processing speed at 2.7GHz.?Just don't be surprised when, a couple of years from now, you're standing in the coffee shop line?behind some little hipster who has a slim?new MacBook Air with all those specs, and that brag-worthy Retina screen,?and it only cost him $999.

Researchers at The University of Nottingham have identified three sets of genetic markers that could potentially pave the way for new diagnostic tools for a deadly type of brain tumour that mainly targets children.

The study, published in the latest edition of the prestigious journal 'Lancet Oncology, was led by Professor Richard Grundy at the University's Children's Brain Tumour Research Centre and Dr Suzanne Miller, a post doctoral research fellow in the Centre.

It focuses on a rare and aggressive cancer called Central Nervous System primitive neuro-ectodermal brain tumours. Patients with CNS PNET have a very poor prognosis and current treatments, including high dose chemotherapy and cranio-spinal radiotherapy are relatively unsuccessful and have severe lifelong side-effects. This is particularly the case in very young children.

Despite the need for new and more effective treatments, little research has been done to examine the underlying causes of CNS PNET, partly due to their rarity. The Nottingham study aimed to identify molecular markers as a first step to improving the treatments and therapies available to fight the cancer.

The Nottingham team collaborated with researchers at the Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto, Canada, to perform an International study collecting 142 CNS PNET samples from 20 institutions in nine countries.

Professor Richard Grundy said: "Following our earlier research we realised that an international effort was needed to bring sufficient numbers of cases together to make the breakthrough we needed to better understand this disease or indeed diseases identified in our study. The next step is to translate this knowledge into improving treatments."

By studying the genetics of the tumours, they discovered that instead of one cancer, the tumours have three sub-types featuring distinct genetic abnormalities and leading to different outcomes for patients.

They found that each group had its own genetic signature through subtle differences in the way they expressed two genetic markers, LIN28 and OLIG2.

When compared with clinical factors including age, survival and metastases (the spread of the tumours through the body), they discovered that group 1 tumours (primitive neural) were found most often in the youngest patients and had the poorest survival rates. Patients with group 3 tumours had the highest incidence of metastases at diagnosis.

Ultimately, the research has identified the two genetic markers LIN28 and OLIG2 as a promising basis for more effective tools for diagnosing and predicting outcomes for young patients with these types of brain tumours.

The research was funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research, the Brainchild/Sick Kids Foundation and the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust.

Chief Executive of Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, Sarah Lindsell, said: "As the UK's leading brain tumour charity, and the largest dedicated funder of brain tumour research, we are delighted that our investment has led to such significant success. It is great to see that understanding of these tumours is improving this is desperately needed given the poor outcomes for children with this tumour. Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust is proud to have been instrumental in this work."

The Children's Brain Tumour Research Centre is one of the projects set to benefit from the Impact Campaign, the biggest fundraising campaign in The University of Nottingham's 130 year history. It aims to raise 150m to transform research, enrich the student experience and enable the institution to make an even greater contribution to the global communities it serves.
