2 dead, 3 wounded in shooting at LA home

Firefighters battled a fire in the East Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon at a house where two people were shot and killed and three were wounded.

A gunman and one of his victims were found dead inside the smoldering remains of a Los Angeles house on Thursday. Three other gunshot victims were rescued from the burning home earlier that afternoon by police and firefighters, authorities said.

The bodies of the gunman and victim were found after the fire was out and authorities were able to search the house, a 1917 single-story rambler in LA's East Hollywood neighborhood, the Associated Press reported.

The three other victims ? two 38-year-old women and a 34-year-old man ? had been shot by the time police and firefighters arrived. They were transported in serious condition to an undisclosed hospital and were expected to survive.

The incident began shortly before 1 p.m. when emergency personnel responded to the home. Firefighters did not enter the home because they worried the gunman was still at large, fire Capt. Jaime Moore told the AP.

Authorities said the shooting was called "domestically motivated" and said the gunman had a relationship with one of the surviving victims, the AP reported.

Authorities cordoned off the block and nearby residents were evacuated, said Los Angeles Police Department Commander Andrew Smith. Some neighbors were concerned that gusty winds could spread the flames in the dense East Hollywood neighborhood.

It took about 150 firefighters and two and a half hours to fight the blaze, according to the Los Angeles Times. When the fire was out, cadaver dogs combed the scene for other possible bodies.

Neighbor Angelica De Paz, speaking in Spanish, told the AP that she was about to run errands when she saw a man kick in the front door of the house where the incident took place. The man was in his 20s or 30s, she said, and he wore a black shirt and blue jeans.

About five minutes later, De Paz said, she received a call from a neighbor who said the house was on fire.

"I thought it was a joke," De Paz said.

Another neighbor, Darwin Urbina, told the AP that he saw a man of the same description sitting on a curb outside the house shortly before he heard shots.

"He had this intent look," Urbina said. "He just stared at me for a while."

Urbina, who has lived in the neighborhood for a decade, described it as marked by gangs and drugs.

Hey guys, whats going on? First post in a while so here's something that you can try. Have you ever seen those recipes on the backs of condiments or other foods like chicken? If you answer no then you probably have never bought a bottle of?ketchup or mustard. If you have seen them but never been inclined to try and make one, you're like me, until yesterday. Eating dinner yesterday night, I was reading the back of a ketchup bottle and it had the recipe for 'Pizza Dogs'. It sounded actually quite nice, but I didn't like what they put into it, like processed cheese along with quite a bit of ketchup (because, of coarse, it was on a bottle of ketchup). So after a little searching, I found this recipe at?Betty Crocker, that was much better. So here it is:

Ingredients:

• 8 hot dogs
• 1/2 cup pizza sauce. You can make your own with tomato sauce by boiling the sauce until it has sufficiently reduced to the consistency you like.?
• 8 hot dog buns,?split in half. (Or one tube of?crescent?rolls, containing 8 rolls if your really fancy.)
• 4 ounces of block?mozzarella cheese.?
• ?4 medium green onions, diced into cubes. Should make around a 1/4 of a cup.?

Preparation:

• If you haven't already, dice your green onions now and split your hot dog buns.
• Shred all of your cheese and keep in a bowl on the side
• You can cook your dogs any way you want, I personally prefer to cook on a grill outside, but you can use your oven or boil them. If your grilling, turn your grill on and close lid to preheat, preheat your oven to around 350F - 400F or get a medium pot and fill with water and place on stove top on high until water boils.?
• Put pizza sauce into a pot and put on medium heat, to keep it warm for later.

Cooking:

• Cook your hot dogs, any way that you decide to cook them, you will know they are done when the ends start to split (10 minutes approx.) If you use a grill or oven, make sure you constantly turn them, to avoid sticking and burning.?
• If you decide to use?crescent?rolls, you can ONLY use your oven so the rolls rise. About 13 minutes cooking at 400F
• When cooked to liking, take off the heat and put dogs into buns.
• Top with pizza sauce, followed by cheese then onions.
• At this point, anything can be put onto the hot dogs.?Personally, I prefer green olives, cut in half, or pieces of bacon. Anything.?
• For?crescent?rolls, just top them with the sauce and toppings, use a knife and fork for this. Not finger food. Unless you don't mind getting everything dirty.?

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time:?20 minutes (approx.)

Total time: 30 minutes

Spot color: Meet world's tiniest chameleon

A species of chameleon small enough to easily perch on a match head has been discovered on a tiny island off Madagascar, a group of scientists has announced.

In addition to the discovery of Brookesia micra, now the tiniest chameleon ever discovered, the researchers also announced the discovery of three additional tiny chameleon species.

Adult males of the B. micra species grow to only just over a half-inch (16 millimeters) from nose to bottom, making them one of the smallest vertebrates ever found on Earth.

From nose to tail, adults of both sexes grow to only 1 inch (30 mm) in length.

Lead researcher Frank Glaw said the team already had experience finding tiny lizards in Madagascar, "but it was also good luck."

The team searched for the tiny lizards under the cover of darkness, using headlamps and flashlights to seek out the sleeping chameleons. All four species are active during the day, and at night climb up into the branches to sleep.

But for such tiny critters, "up into the branches" means a mere 4 inches (10 centimeters) off the ground, Glaw told OurAmazingPlanet, so finding them is no easy task. However, once spotted, the tiny lizards aren't tough to catch, Glaw said.

"They are sleeping and you can just pick them up. It's like picking a strawberry, so it's easy," Glaw said. "They do not move at all at night."

The team of scientists found the tiny reptiles in Madagascar's wild northern regions during expeditions between 2003 and 2007. For three of the species, "we immediately identified them as new species," said Glaw, a veteran herpetologist and curator at the Museum of Natural History in Munich.

"In general, these tiny chameleons are so small that it's really hard to see the small differences with the naked eye," he said.

The researchers warn that at least two of the newly discovered chameleon species are extremely threatened because of habitat loss and deforestation in Madagascar.

Glaw, who has been going to Madagascar to research its ever-expanding list of amphibians and reptiles for a quarter century, said that B. micra may represent the limit of miniaturization possible for a vertebrate with complex eyes, but said it's impossible to know for sure since each time scientists have proclaimed the discovery of the tiniest one yet, another, tinier species appears.

"Maybe there's a potential for a smaller species," Glaw said.

Another group of researchers recently announced the discovery of the world's smallest frog species in Papua New Guinea. The scientists also declared it the world's smallest vertebrate, but others contend that a species of angler fish is the smallest vertebrate yet discovered on Earth.

Glaw is planning another expedition to the region of Madagascar in November.

"I'm sure there are many surprises awaiting discovery," he said.

The research is to be published in the Wednesday issue of the open access journal PLoS ONE.
