Vermont community mourns brutal death of teacher

A Vermont community gathered to mourn the death of a popular prep school teacher on Friday, also giving the police investigators who solved the crime a standing ovation.

The crowd of 2,500 was sprinkled with pink, the color of the ribbon people wore to honor the life of Melissa Jenkins, as they squeezed inside of the St. Johnsbury Academy gymnasium, the San Francisco Gate reported.

A snowplow driver and his wife are accused of murdering Jenkins, allegedly luring her from her house, saying their car was broken down. When she went to help them, they are accused of killing her and dumping her body into the Connecticut River, all while her 2-year-old son was in the car, ABC reported.

?We can now turn our full attention to healing from this tragic loss, celebrating Melissa?s life and mourning her death,? said Joe Healy, a spokesman for St. Johnsbury Academy.

Allen Prue, 30, and his wife, Patricia Prue, 33, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to second-degree murder of Jenkins and unauthorized burial or removal of a dead body.

Earlier Friday, President Barack Obama sent his condolences to the Jenkins family at a campaign stop in Burlington, Vt., and members of the Vermont House wore pink ribbons and honored a moment of silence for Jenkins.
