The Motor Report's Ten Automotive Video Faves Of 2012 | Reviews ...

So, you've finished your Christmas shopping - maybe with a little help from our gift guide - and now you're waiting for the big day to roll along.

As a reward for deftly avoiding a trip to the in-laws today, we?ve compiled 10 of our favourite manufacturer videos from 2012.

Here you'll find everything from electric vehicle technology triumph to racing accomplishment (or both), to unabashed tyre frying, automotive poetry and plain old automotive saliva triggering.

These clips are but a mere snippet of what we've seen this year, so if you can think of something that also rates a mention, feel free to mention it in the comments section below.

Ten Of The Best (in no particular order) From 2012

Pagani - ?The Beginnings?

For those who wonder where the celebrated Italian supercar manufacturer came from, Pagani has put together this five-part series exploring the brand's past.

The series touches on founder Horacio Pagani?s art and science philosophy, his early career with Lamborghini and development of his composite material expertise, through to the many iterations of Zonda and the current Huayra production models.

Automotive romance at its finest.

Audi R8 e-Tron - Production Electric Vehicle N?rburgring Record Lap

Now on Audi?s backburner, an R8 e-tron prototype set a new N?rbrugring Nordschleife lap time of 8:09.099 in June - with Audi claiming it as a new record for a pure-electric production model.

Driver Markus Winkelhock will have to scrub this boast from his list of achievements for the time being though, until the R8 e-tron reaches production - if ever.

Either way, Audi?s official video of the lap gives a great taste of what wind noise sounds like when not tainted by the sounds of a combustion engine...

Nissan Leaf Goodwood Hillclimb Record

One 2012 pure-electric speed record that officially stands though, is Nissan?s Goodwood Festival Of Speed Hillcclimb record set by a Leaf hatch - in reverse.

With its reverse speed limiter removed, the direct-drive Leaf hatch completed the 1.6km track in 1m37.02s at an average speed of 88.5km/h.

Proof that the British sense of humour is as good as ever.

Jaguar F-Type teasers

Jaguar has released a whole series of video clips this year for its new F-TYPE roadster.

Ranging from disguised prototype footage, to revealing the sounds of its supercharged V6 and V8 engines, to the upcoming Ridley Scott short film collaboration entitled ?Desire?, Jaguar is pulling out all the stops in marketing the new model.

The video shown here was used to reveal the F-Type in production form at September?s Paris Motor Show, but the rest can be seen via Jaguar?s Youtube channel.

Red Bull F1 Car On New York Streets

Red Bull Racing put together this video to promote the now-postponed Grand Prix of America Formula 1 race in New Jersey, but within sight of the famous New York skyline.

Former F1 driver David Coulthard drove the 2011 Championship-winning RB7 model around Liberty State Park, then through to New York City proper via the Lincoln Tunnel, before finishing with a lap of the streets set to form the Grand Prix of America circuit in 2014.

The Nissan Juke-R: Desert Nemesis

This big dollar Juke-R promo film follows GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez through his competition in the Dubai 24 Hour race, before Ordonez is ?challenged? to a street race the following day.

This street race is set around the streets of Dubai, where the Juke-R battles a Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Gallardo, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

BMW M6 Gran Coupe Promo Vid

BMW?s promotional film for its recently revealed M6 Gran Coupe is entitled ?Beyond Status? - a clear reflection of the Gran Coupe?s sedan version of a coupe version of the 5 Series sedan?s genesis.

This doesn?t matter, as it looks just dandy, and arguably the finest bearer of BMW?s current design language.

BMW?s high-production-value launch video will help you to agree.

Ken Block?s Gymkhana FIVE

The fifth instalment of Ken Block?s Gymkhana series was filmed in the most ambitious locale to date; the streets of San Francisco.

Block?s team somehow managed to close some of San Francisco?s most significant arteries for filming, and took advantage to the city?s many crests - the backdrop of countless film car-chase scenes over the years.

The film closes with Block doing doughnuts on a floating barge in San Francisco Bay, to the tune of Styx? ?Come Sail Away?.

Dark Side of the C 63 AMG Black Series

Mercedes-Benz AMG put together this sinister black-and-white snarl-fest to promote its now sold-out C 63 AMG Black Series.

Watch it, and you?ll wish this particular Black were still in production. (And that you could afford one... - Ed.)

Nissan Altima V8 Supercar First Drive

V8 Supercars Australia demonstrated their Falcon and Commodore ?Car of the Future? prototypes at the end of 2011, but this video released by Nissan Motorsport in November offered a first look at its new racer on the track.

While sharing common chassis and most driveline components with its Ford, Holden, and (yet to be unveiled) Mercedes-Benz AMG counterparts, this video also gave fans their first listen to the Nissan?s unique 2013 Patrol VK56DE-based engine.

Have a look if you haven?t already.

Turn It Up To 11

Here's an honourable mention, released just this month: a new Red Bull Racing clip that looks back on its short but impressive run in Formula 1.
