LONDON (AP) ? It's amazing how much trouble can be stirred up in 140 characters or less.

But also how much intimacy, excitement, global scope and, yes, general zaniness. For better and for worse, the 2012 Olympics are being shaped, shaken and indisputably changed by a social media revolution that four years ago in Beijing was in its toddlerhood.

Four days into the games, we've already seen (and this is but a partial list):

?an athletes' Twitter campaign objecting to sponsorship restrictions that went viral under the hashtag "WeDemandChange."

?a television viewers uprising over Olympic broadcaster NBC's decision not to live stream the opening ceremony.

?two athletes kicked out for racist tweets.

?a fan arrested Tuesday after a series of threatening posts, including one in which he vowed to drown a British diver, and another in which he told the athlete he had failed his dead father by not winning.

For Olympics organizers who pride themselves on putting on a carefully choreographed ? obsessively controlled, some would say ? 17-day show, the bursts of Twitter activity are like gamma rays escaping from a solar flare. They're impossible to stop and spellbinding to behold.

"I don't think we would seek to control it, nor could we," said International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams. He said more than 15 million fans are following and participating in the Olympic experience via Twitter and other social media platforms, not to mention a good proportion of the 10,800 athletes. "Used the right way, we embrace social media," he said. "And, if you look at the guidelines, we positively encourage it."

The problem is, it isn't always used that way.

The immediacy and public nature of Twitter and its propensity to induce off-the-cuff irreverence, and sometimes breathtaking ugliness, has added a new and chaotic element to an event where everything from urine samples to sponsors' logos to London traffic is arranged with overcaffeinated attention to detail worthy of a royal wedding.

"Though organizers have spent months touting this as the first social media Summer Games, many of them seem to have been totally unprepared for the huge impact that Twitter has had," said Andy Miah, director of the Creative Futures Institute at the University of the West of Scotland. "I think there was some naivete about the likely role of social media from both participants and from the organizers. Many of them appear to have been wrongfooted."

Twitter has been used in many ways during its brief life ? some very organized and tactical, some more spontaneous and disorderly. It has been a tool of protest and organization for the Occupy Wall Street movement and Arab Spring activists. Yet it has also led to the downfall of click-happy politicians, and the sometimes embarrassing late-night revelations of A-list celebrities.

The social network is now at the fingertips of 140 million users, up from a few million when the Olympics were held in Beijing in 2008. The San Francisco-based company says there have been more than 10 million tweets mentioning the Olympics during the first few days of the games. The exponential jump from four years ago has been driven by the rise of smartphones, now carried by spectators and athletes alike, each watching each other watch each other.

Which of course raises the question: When exuberant, often young athletes are going through the experience of their lives on one hand, and it's unfolding in a deeply controlled environment on the other, how do you make sure everyone gets what they need without it all turning to anarchy?

The IOC, Miah says, has tried to exert control by creating its own social media hub ? gathering athletes' tweets and posts from Facebook, the other formidable player in this landscape. But it hasn't always worked out as planned.

On Saturday, U.S. women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo launched a Twitter outburst against Brandi Chastain, the former American soccer player who is now an analyst on NBC. "Its 2 bad we can't have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game," Solo wrote.

Dozens of athletes, including some British soccer players, have taken to Twitter to promote their sponsors' products, a violation of Olympic rules that could theoretically lead to their expulsions. Some Olympians, undoubtedly delighting agents and marketers back home, have started an online campaign to get the rules changed.

And it's not just athletes who are stirring the stew of controversy.

British lawmaker Aidan Burley earned a sharp rebuke from fellow conservatives after he tweeted that Danny Boyle's critically acclaimed opening ceremony, which told the story of Britain's history in a rousing mix of music, symbolism and showmanship, was "leftie multicultural crap."

A British journalist said his Twitter account was blocked after he criticized NBC's coverage of the opening ceremony and posted the e-mail of a network executive. And thousands of disgruntled Olympics viewers set up hashtag "nbcfail" on Twitter to air complaints about the media company's coverage.

Then there's the teenager from Dorset who was arrested Tuesday after a series of offensive and, authorities say, menacing tweets directed at British Olympian Tom Daley. The suspect could be prosecuted under British law.

And yet Twitter has fast become an indispensable part of the Olympic scene. It is as valuable to today's spectators as programs and scorecards were to another generation, and it is just as important to the athletes seeking to connect with supporters from behind the Olympic curtain.

For young fans, "take away Twitter and you take away part of the experience," said Steve Jones, a professor who studies online culture and communications at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Olympians have used Twitter to tell supporters what they are eating, how they are feeling and who they are hanging out with. Jamaican mega-star Usain Bolt tweeted about his craving for chicken. American hurdler Lolo Jones revealed she's a virgin.

Perhaps that is too much information and intimacy for some, but Twitter, Facebook and their many copycats are not going anywhere, and it's time we got used to it.

Andy Hunt, the head of the British Olympic association, found himself dealing with a double whammy of Twitter eruptions ? defending his star diver against social-network vitriol while vowing to look into whether the host country's soccer players should be disciplined for using the site for "ambush marketing."

"I think everyone knows, if you use social media extensively, you have to accept you get bad as well as good," Hunt told journalists. "And sometimes bad is wholly unacceptable."

Iran blamed for 'Israel diplomat attack in Delhi'

Indian police have concluded that members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, a branch of the Iranian military, carried out an attack on an Israeli diplomat in New Delhi in February, a report said on Monday.

The Times of India, citing the police investigation, said that five suspects were believed to have worked with a local Indian journalist to plan the attack which saw a hitman on a motorbike attach a magnetic bomb to an embassy car.

Interpol had already issued international arrest warrants for four of the suspects named in the report in March, but this is the first time it has been alleged they were members of the Revolutionary Guards.

"Details about the suspects have been shared with Iran," the newspaper said.

It named Houshang Afshar Irani, who lists his profession as a builder, as the mastermind of the attack and said he was also behind separate plots to kill Israelis in Thailand and Georgia at around the same time.

The main plotters were believed by police to have entered the country on tourist visas and left after the assassination attempt.

In March, veteran Indian freelance journalist Syed Mohammed Kazmi who worked part-time for Iran's news agency IRNA became the first person arrested in connection with the attack.

A 42-year-old Israeli diplomat, the wife of the defence attache at the embassy, was badly wounded in the attack that took place near the prime minister's residence in the centre of the Indian capital.

Israel immediately blamed Iran for the attack.

Analysts speculated that Tehran was retaliating for a series of attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists which have been blamed on the Israeli secret service, Mossad.

Syrian regime claims gains in Aleppo, rebels deny

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government forces battled rebels over one of their strongholds in the northern city of Aleppo on Monday, with each side claiming victory.

The U.S. defense secretary, meanwhile, kicked off a tour of the Middle East criticizing Syrian President Bashar Assad's use of heavy weapons in putting down the rebellion, describing it as "a nail in Assad's coffin."

The Syrian government announced late Sunday it had "purged" the district of Salahhedine and inflicted "great losses" upon the rebels ? a claim which opposition activists dispute.

"They were just in part of Salaheddine, not in the center," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Activists on the ground in Aleppo confirmed that the fighting was ongoing and no government forces were inside the neighborhood of Salaheddine, one of the first to revolt against the government in this city of 3 million.

"They have tanks in nearby Hamdaniya and there is fighting, and there have been random bombardments of Salaheddine," said Mohammed Saeed, who is based in the embattled city.

The government has massed forces outside Aleppo and began an assault over the weekend to retake the commercial hub. The international community has expressed fears over a possible massacre of civilians if the fighting escalates.

While giving no indication that the Obama administration is contemplating military intervention, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said it is increasingly clear that the Syrian crisis is deepening and that Assad is hastening his own demise.

"If they continue this kind of tragic attack on their own people ... I think it ultimately will be a nail in Assad's coffin," Panetta told reporters traveling with him from Washington. "His regime is coming to an end."

GM Ramps Up Risky Subprime Auto Loans To Drive ... - Lux Libertas

President Obama has touted General Motors (GM) as a successful example of his administration?s policies. Yet GM?s recovery is built, at least in part, on the increasing use of subprime loans.

The Obama administration in 2009 bailed out?GM to the tune of $50 billion as it went into a managed bankruptcy.

Near the end of 2010, GM acquired a new captive lending arm, subprime specialist AmeriCredit. Renamed GM Financial, it has played a significant role in GM?s growth .

The automaker is relying increasingly on subprime loans, 10-Q financial reports shows.

Potential borrowers of car loans are rated on FICO scores that range from 300 to 850. Anything under 660 is generally deemed subprime.

Subprime Key Driver

GM Financial auto loans to customers with FICO scores below 660 rose from 87% of total loans in Q4 2010 to 93% in Q1 2012.

The worse the FICO score, the bigger the increase. From Q4 2010 to Q1 2012, GM Financial loans to customers with the worst FICO scores ? below 540 ? shot up 79% to more than $2.3 billion. The second worst category, 540-599, rose 28% from about $3.4 billion to $4.3 billion.

Prime loans, those above 660, dropped 42% to $676 million.

GM Financial provides just over 8% of GM?s financing. Prior to 2006, GM?s captive lending arm was GMAC, but GM sold a controlling stake in 2006. GMAC later renamed itself Ally Financial and continues to provide the bulk of GM?s financing.

At the peak of the credit crisis and recession in late 2008, Ally announced that it would move away from subprime lending.

By spring 2010 GM?s new management, led by North American executive Mark Reuss, wanted to move back into subprime, fearing that GM couldn?t compete.

Subprime lending in cars is not as risky as in housing. Car loans are cheaper, so customers have an easier time making payments. When they do go into default, the cars can be repossessed and sold to recover some of the loss.

?The subprime market grew as a result of the recession,? said GM spokesman Jim Cain. ?Our experience, however, is that with proper management they are very good risks.?

He points to GM?s credit losses which have not risen above 5.5% since late 2010.

Nevertheless, since it acquired GM Financial, GM has seen its subprime loans grow from about 4.8% of sales in Q4 2010 to 8.2% in Q1 2012. The industry average is about 6%.

?Is GM taking on more risk than is safe given our uncertain economy?? asks Edward Niedermeyer, TheTruthAboutCars.com editor-at-large. ?They may be trying to goose short-term sales with subprime lending to boost its stock price, which is tied to the government getting out of its GM investment.?

GM still owes about $26.4 billion in direct aid to the federal government. The Treasury owns 26.5% of the automaker, or 500 million shares. The stock price would need to be 53 to recoup those taxpayer costs.

GM shares closed Friday at 19.67 after hitting a post-IPO low on Wednesday.

Subprime ?Double Standard?

When pushing the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul, Obama told Americans, ?you have a stake in it if you?ve ever tried to take out a home loan, a car loan, or a student loan, and been targeted by the predatory practices of unscrupulous lenders.?

While the administration has targeted subprime mortgage lending, it seems to have turned a blind eye to auto subprime loans.

?The Obama administration has seen to it that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is important in the subprime mortgage arena,? said Niedermeyer. ?But it has exempted auto-finance from that. I definitely think it is a double standard.?

He also wonders if the Treasury will be able to recoup its GM aid: ?The conventional wisdom has been that consumers have too much debt and need to de-leverage. Having that weak underlying foundation makes this rise into subprime lending by GM more worrisome.?

Indie film financiers add $275 million to fund

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Independent film financiers Emmett/Furla Films and Envision Entertainment have added $275 million to their film fund, the companies announced on Monday.

The two companies, one led by Randall Emmett and George Furla, the other by Stepan Martirosyan and Remington Chase, established the fund last September to finance "high-end, star driven commercial features" in collaboration with prominent production and distribution companies.

At the time they had raised $250 million, and in Monday's announcement they said they have since entered production on eight films.

"Raising money in this market place is extremely tough, but between both our companies, we were able to raise another fund and are excited to work with talented actors and filmmakers in 2013," Emmett said in a statement. "Stepan, Remington, George and myself cannot be more excited about the next couple years," stated Randall Emmett.

They have already financed films such as "Motor City," which stars Gerard Butler, "2 Guns," a co-production with Universal that stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, and Lionsgate/Summit's "The Tomb," which stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Four of those movies - "End of Watch," "Lay the Favorite," "Alex Cross" and "Broken City" - will be released in the next few months.

Europe's economic confidence slides in July

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The EU's executive branch reports that economic confidence fell in July, as hope declined in industry and the services sector.

The European Commission said Monday that its economic sentiment indicator for the 17 eurozone countries fell 2.0 points, to 87.9. In the 27-nation EU, the indicator decreased 1.4 points, to 89.0.

The continued drop may be an indication that doubts over the future financial stability of Greece and Spain are affecting the entire region.

The Commission said the EU-wide decline was led by the services sector, while the drop in the eurozone was due to loss of confidence in industry and among consumers.

Among the EU's larger economies, sharp drops were registered in Germany, France and Spain. Increases in confidence were recorded in the U.K., Italy and the Netherlands.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has "a solemn duty and a moral imperative" to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

"Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way," he said. "We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The presidential election hovered over the speech. The Old City formed a made-for-television backdrop behind Romney, while some of his campaign donors listened in the audience.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was matter-of-fact and in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

He did not say if he would order the embassy moved if he wins the White House, but strongly suggested so in a CNN interview.

"My understanding is the policy of our nation has been a desire to move our embassy ultimately to the capital (Jerusalem)," he said, adding, "I would only want to do so and to select the timing in accordance with the government of Israel."

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Sheldon Adelson, the American businessman who has said he will donate millions to help elect Romney to the White House.

Romney's embrace of Israel was on display throughout the day when he met with Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and other leaders. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers. In addition, Romney met with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of President Barack Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from security nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

The former Massachusetts governor also stepped back from a comment a senior aide made a short while before the speech.

"We recognize Israel's right to defend itself," he told the audience. Earlier, the aide, Dan Senor, previewed the speech for reporters, saying that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision."

Israel is the second of three stops on an international trip for Romney in the weeks before he claims the Republican nomination at his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

He flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, then-U.S. Sen. Barack Obama also visited Israel as a candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

In his speech, Romney said Syrian President Bashar Assad "desperately clings to power" in Damascus in the face of an attempted overthrow, but he did not call for his removal.

He noted that Egypt is now headed by an "Islamist president, chosen in a Democratic election. ... The international community must use its considerable influence to insure that the new government honors the peace agreement with Israel that was signed by the government of Anwar Sadat" more than three decades ago, he said.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel, noting statements the president has made about settlements and his handling of evident Iranian attempt to develop nuclear weapons.

Tehran is closer to developing nuclear weapons capability than before, Romney said. "Preventing that outcome must be our highest national security priority."

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is not the time to bluster," he said then. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

It was unlikely that the day's events would settle the issue.

Obama's former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told ABC's "This Week" that the administration has delayed Iran's nuclear program. The president has imposed U.S. penalties against Iran and worked to tougher strictures applied by other nations. There have been numerous published reports of a coordinated U.S.-Israeli cyberattack that caused damage to Iranian equipment vital to creating weapons-grade nuclear material.

Even so, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the speech that "all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota."

Whatever the reality, the administration has taken steps in recent days to reassure Israel of its support.

Most notably, Obama approved an increase in assistance to strengthen a missile defense system that is designed to protect Israel from rocket attacks launched from the Gaza.

Senor's comments caused a stir in the hours leading to Romney's speech, a reminder of the controversy that Romney had created a few days earlier in London.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying that the candidate "believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

Cell phone use in the developing world has climbed to nearly 5 billion mobile subscriptions, and three-quarters of the world now has access to mobile networks. This technology is reshaping the way individuals and communities manage their finances, monitor weather, engage with government, and earn a living, according to the recent World Bank Maximizing Mobile report.

?People are going from zero to 60. It is huge to go from no phone at all to a cellphone,? says Anne Nelson, international media development specialist and adjunct professor at Columbia University. ?The rapid penetration of cellphones in developing countries is changing lives dramatically.?

Mobile devices in regions like Africa are largely limited to voice and Short Message Service texting, but even the most basic mobile communications can increase school attendance, facilitate banking or cash transfers, create jobs, measure health indicators, accelerate disaster response, and fuel citizen engagement in governance and democracy.

For example, in Niger, access to cellphones has allowed grain traders to compare market prices across the country, cutting the cost of traveling to different markets and resulting in profit improvements of nearly 30 percent for traders. In Kenya, a program sent text messages to rural AIDS patients, reminding them to take their antiretroviral drugs.? It was found that sending these messages was not only more affordable than in-person reminders, but those receiving SMS messages showed higher rates of taking their meds than those who did not receive them.?

Mobile technology has also been lauded in the recent democratic uprisings in the Middle East. In Egypt, only about 10 percent of the population had landlines a decade ago, leaving much of the population without any phone access at all. Today, there are 82 million mobile phones in circulation, and the numbers are constantly growing.

The phones were ?game changers? during the Arab uprisings, not necessarily because of Twitter or Facebook ? many cellphones in Egypt, as in many rural parts of the developing world, don't have broadband access. Instead, ?for the first time, people were able to call or text each other and say ?Hey, let?s meet and go down to the square.? That wasn?t possible before,? says Ms. Nelson.

LONDON (AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II toured London's Olympic heartland Saturday hours after she surprised a worldwide audience by starring as the newest Bond Girl.

The queen got a bird's eye view of the Olympic Park complex atop the 377-foot (115-meter) Orbit sculpture beside the stadium, where on Friday night she officially opened the 2012 Games. Her husband Prince Philip and London Mayor Boris Johnson accompanied her as she rode up two floors in the sculpture's elevator to meet designer Anish Kapoor.

Dressed in a royal blue silk dress, crepe coat and matching hat, the queen could be heard remarking at the views of the London skyline and countryside up to 20 miles (32 kilometers) away. She was also wearing a brooch given to her in 1948, the last time London hosted the Olympics and four years before her accession to the throne.

Johnson said the queen had told him she was "very, very impressed with the success of her first film appearance, her first dramatic venture. It was very funny and seems to have gone down particularly well with the international audiences."

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 86-year-old monarch agreed last year to participate in Danny Boyle's film portion of his four-hour opening ceremony extravaganza. Filming took place at the palace in March and April and featured three of the queen's corgi dogs: Monty, Holly and Willow.

Boyle's production involved Daniel Craig, the reigning James Bond, striding into Buckingham Palace to escort his VIP guest to the Olympic ceremony. Many watching had expected a famous actress to play the role of the queen, and untold thousands in the audience audibly gasped as the real-life queen was seen to swivel round in her desk chair and declare: "Good evening, Mr. Bond."

At the end of the film segment, two stuntmen dressed as Bond and the queen parachuted from a helicopter into the stadium, and moments later Elizabeth and Philip emerged in the stands.

The queen offered more surprises Saturday as she paid a walking visit to the athletes village and met about 150 members of the British Olympic team. Spectators took in the scene from balconies draped in Union Jack flags.

"For her to come through and meet the athletes, and see where we're living, it was amazing," said Rose Anderson, 24, a member of the women's basketball team.

"She went inside one of the athletes' bedrooms and chatted to us. It was just awesome, especially after last night," she said, referring to the opening ceremony. "Last night will never be topped. I'll never get an experience like that again, and then this will never be topped either."

The queen also met athletes from other nations in the dining hall.

"She's beautiful," said Jess Fox, who competes for Australia in the canoe slalom. "We saw her from afar last night in the stadium, but it was amazing to see her like this."

• Morgan Janssen: ?/? It varies from day to day. Her effervescence can range from annoying to extremely grating depending on how hung-over I am, but she?s got this inner skank-bitch that I can?t help but be intrigued by and want to bring out as often as possible.
• Isabella Dorson: ? If only her power weren?t so absurdly boring. I mean, yeah, people are scared of it, why wouldn?t they be? But it isn?t exactly interesting. What is interesting is her philosophy regarding it.
• Allison Mccray: ? She would have done well at Noctrem. I don?t think Leo managed to ruin her yet, which is impressive given how deep his virtuous claws have managed to sink into some of these kids. Middling power, but, she?s her own person. That?s kind of a super-power all its own. I think I just threw up a little in my mouth saying that.
• Skylar Byrnes: ? Ah, Skylar. He makes making fun of him incredibly easy, and yet still seems astonished when I do it. If you?re going to spend more time on your hair than any girl in the school, don?t be surprised when I ask you to say hi to Rachel Zoe for me. That being said, I like the kid. He?s got spunk (the metaphorical kind? well, probably the literal kind too, actually), and his power is one of what I consider ?The Classic Villain Powers?.
• Lauryn Chase: ? Sweet Mary and Joseph. I actually want to hug this girl. She doesn't whine, she doesn't flatter, she's just an intelligent young woman who has her priorities straight, and it's a fucking breath of fresh air compared to most of these mouth-breathers. Her power is among the more interesting boring powers- what impresses me the most about her is that she'd rather work on fine-tuning her psychometry than removing the inconvenience of it triggering off any bare-skin touch. Why? Because she was smart enough to buy a pair of gloves.
• Eriol Adelart: ?/? No one should have a power like that. I just... the kid could be a god, if he wanted to. Fortunately he seems more interested in being a nuisance. I encourage this because it amuses me, and because it makes me feel like he isn't going to appear in my bedroom one night and kill me in my sleep. Jesus.
• Theodore McCaffry: ? Okay, maybe there is one person who was hit harder by Noctrem burning down than me. This kid has issues, but he also has plenty of reason to have issues. I would know, being the one who found him dumpster-diving and traded him a ham sandwich for his life story. I can?t really teach him much, but I worry about him. He thinks he has everyone fooled, and he does have a lot of them fooled. I actually think being at Arcana might be the best thing for him right now.
• Drake Quellen: ? This boy occasionally brings a nostalgic tear to my eye. He's a lot like me, only more driven, which means that someday he'll probably actually do some fairly amazing things. He's one of the students that I'm proud of, and I don't mind at all that he looks to me as a mentor. I mean, if I were actually a good mentor, I'd probably encourage him to find one that isn't me, but I'm selfish that way.
• Lilian Daniels: ? Powers like hers just irritate me. I can't really help her get better at the power itself, so I have to focus on building up the supplemental skills that will help her make better use of it. Her diffidence doesn't help matters at all. The girl has all the appeal of unflavored yogurt.
• Jade Locke: ? Oh, Jade. You know, I did get around an awful lot around the time she was conceived. I?ve never asked her about her family, because I frankly don?t care, but I sometimes wonder if I might actually be her deadbeat dad. We?re uncannily alike, and she?s a teek, which is always enjoyable. Incidentally, she always has the best weed.
• Griffin Jacobs: ? Griff is a very sensible young man. He's kept to a little agreement we made when he first came to Noctrem about what would happen to his testicles if I ever caught him using his power on me, so I can't really dislike him. His Persuasion is obviously among the top contenders, and he's got a great handle on a lot of aspects of it, so I try to get him to think outside the box with it.
• Zac Barnes: ? Another feisty Arcana kid with a cool power. It amuses me deeply that he tries to use it to shirk schoolwork. I combat this by helping him get better at using it to shirk schoolwork, so that he has no interest in dicking off in my class.
• Izaiah Dorson: ?/? So, funny story. First day of class after the combination, I manage to make this kid so nervous that he falls through his chair. Not out of it. Through it. While the goody-two-shoes thing gets old pretty fast, he does have a competitive streak that I feel duty-bound to encourage by pitting him against other students whenever I can.
• William Pond: ?/? Confession time: I'm one of those guys who has no interest in keeping up with technology. I long for the days of vinyl records and actually having conversations, so the current generation's obsession with instant-messaging and texting just enrages me. As a result, I have a hard time with William's power. I've tried it out a few times, and it's one of the few I've ever felt remotely inadequate using. He seems just fine diddling away on his laptop in my class though, so, whatever.
• Elijah Claymore: ? Cool power, boring kid. That would pretty much sum it up if I could ignore the fact that he has the potential to be a great Power Control teacher someday. Even though I sometimes find myself wanting to strangle him for being so insipidly nice, I haven't given up just yet.
• Freya Mason: ? I?m working really hard to turn this girl into the second coming of Cupid, I really am. I?m proud of Frey. She?s come a long way, and before long, she?s gonna be able to really fuck with people. I?m a little jealous how much chaos she can create as it is.
• Marcurio Espenosa: ? Flattery will get you everywhere, Mercutio, and fart jokes too. One of my favorites who isn't a budding psychopath. This might largely stem from the fact that I get to requisition human cadavers for my class now.
• Erin Hawthorne: ? NOW. ERIN. SMASH. Sorry. I couldn?t help myself. Erin is? complicated, both in and of herself, and as a student. All I can really try to help her with is control; not letting the beast out when she doesn?t want to, and tapping into it when she isn?t pissed off. Fortunately I can snag her ability in a pinch, but? it isn?t really something I enjoy doing.
• Colby Haskins: ? Arcana really had to get the speedster, huh? And boy did they get him. This kid makes me feel like Wile E. Coyote plotting to catch the Roadrunner. I'm not being metaphorical, I literally sometimes sketch out elaborate plans to trap him, because if he doesn't want me to, I can't touch him. Weirdly enough, when he does land in detention, he doesn't put up much of a fight about me taking it.
• Kaliyah Rickerson: ? I?ve actually never seen this power before, and it?s a lot of fun to mess around with. Kali seems to have a good head on her shoulder, too. Can?t help but approve of this one.
• Amariah Conner: ? Eh. She seems to like to keep things professional, which I don't really mind because she's dull as paste. I'm trying to get her to hone in on some of the more subtle applications of her ability, since the unsubtle ones come so naturally.
• Keirol Rancora: ? It slices! It dices! It also makes Julienne fries! On a more serious note, I enjoy both his testy, instinctive nature and his ability. I don't enjoy how far up Leo's butt he is. It brings a whole new meaning to the term "teacher's pet", and frankly, he could do a lot better than that moralizing walking corpse. Also, if you're going to make up a fake-name, you should probably avoid similarities to the giant monster underneath Jabba's palace.
• McKenna Marinos: ?/? Quirky, nerdy girl regenerated wounds. News at 11. Her power is tricky to work with, but most automatic passive powers are. I haven't worked out how she does that wound transference thing yet, but we'll get there.
• Benjamin Hershkovitz: ?/? WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING HERE? I don't know how he got into my school. Must have been a smack day when the paperwork came through, because... what the Hell am I supposed to teach this kid? He'd be better off learning from the Coast Guard. His personality is at least enjoyable, though, so I suppose I don't mind overall, just... seriously. Oxygen Independence?
• Jessica Coleman: ?/? I've worked with Jess a lot, and I'm going to keep doing so. Her pew-pew has so much potential for growth, both in terms of raw destructive power and her ability to use it without side-effects that I consider her something of a pet-project. I'm also trying to cure her of being so damned concerned with what people think. She puts up a nice front, but... yeah, mood-swings like hers are not a mark of the well-adjusted.
• Amber Romano: ? I call her A, for obvious reasons. Her power is sort of middling, but you have to admire the entrepreneurial spirit with which she's embraced it. So maybe I sometimes slip her a fin to spread a particularly amusing rumor I thought up. What's the harm in that? I can't help it that I'm a sucker for gossip.
• Scott Andrews: ? Ah, Sparky. If only you weren't so fond of Hey Leonardo. It gives me a lot to draw on in terms of getting under his skin, though, which is my secret plan for helping him not kill everyone every time he gets upset. To make him upset. Genius, right?
• Elias Novario: ?/? Not much I can do for him other than encourage him to practice. One of the more interesting quiet kids, though; I'm pretty sure it's calculated on his part, so I'm intrigued to see where he goes with it.
• Landon Hirst: ? Impressive kid, in terms of how far he's come without my guidance. I think it has a lot more to do with him than anything Arcana managed to do for him. He's not nearly as do-goodery as his butt-buddy, so, I don't mind him, really.
• Spencer Jerem: ? Like I can teach him? Given my own high IQ, I have a better handle on him than most... so I'll be watching him like a hawk. I also try to get him to realize there's more to life than being an autodidact and beating computers at chess.

• Leonardo Marinos: ? He?s a sanctimonious little prick. If I had a two-millennia head start on the rest of society, you?d be addressing me as ?Hegemon? and feeding me grapes in a toga. I really and truly do not understand how he can be so incredibly narrow-minded about the nature of human existence after basically watching all of history. It also ticks me off that he?s younger- and better- looking than I am.
• Amalthea Roerig: ? Mary Poppins. That?s what I call her at least. I seriously think that I once saw a rainbow come out of her ass. She?s very fun to mess with, and I have ample opportunity given the daily minor injuries I receive in the course of wrangling a bunch of superhuman teenagers and teaching them how to use their powers.

My self-preservation instincts are too keen for me to get close to her in the real world, but I've checked out her dreams, and they're intense. Really primal. I can get lost in them some times. I don't think we've ever said a word to one another.

I don't understand how he can be friends with someone like Haskins, but then again,I'm half-expecting them to make an advance together one of these days. • Spencer Jerem: ?/? Spencer is... we were always cordial. Now moreso. He deduced some of what I can do, and he's more than intelligent enough to guess at the rest of what I do. • Leonardo Marinos: ?/? I like the fact that he actually behaves like a headmaster, and his dreams? are just riveting. I couldn?t help but look, and I don?t let on that I have. The only problem is his class. I have to hold back to avoid showing people what I can do, and it?s sometimes very tempting to prove that I?m not as useless as they think I am. It?s almost physically painful that this is affecting my GPA.
• Amalthea Roerig: ?/? My favorite class, easily. I can?t help myself in it. I don?t hold back at all when it comes to philosophical debates. She?s nice enough, and not particularly obtrusive, so overall, I like her.
• Vincent Steele: ?/?/? Mr. Steele. I know he knows I?m putting up a front, but for some reason he hasn?t arranged some sort of intervention yet. I really don?t know what to make of that. I feel bad for disliking him, because he?s only trying to help, but he can?t help and I can?t make him realize that, so we?re at something of an impasse.

• Addison Lawler: ? I can?t help but like this girl. She?s so much fun. She has a lot of friends that I don?t care for, but she probably thinks the same thing about me. I think people see her as sluttier than me, when really, I?m just more selective about who I go after.
• Ashleigh Fox: ? Ashy is great. She comes off all shy, but she?s awesome when you get to know her. And she can dance. Man, can she dance.
• Corentine Quellen: ? The only good thing I can say about her is that she?s not afraid to be herself. In her case though, it isn?t all that great. First-class bitch, loves hurting people, and worst of all, the odds are actually in her favor in a one vs. one. I mean, I could take her, but it would be tough if I didn?t get the drop on her.
• Morgan Janssen: ?You know the real problem with most of these Noctrem people? They think ?nice? means ?dumb?. Morgan?s not dumb. I get even madder when people say it about her than I do when they say it about me. Her power is also totally legit for chatting in class, haha.
• Isabella Dorson: ? I heard a lot about her before I met her, and I was so ready to hate. But she?s actually? cool. Fun, haha. I mean, when she does get pissed, she can really hurt people, but I?ve never seen her just walk around zapping people with pain.
• Allison Mccray: ? Eh. We don?t really see eye to eye on some stuff. But on the bright side, she makes me feel like I?m not all into myself as much as people think.
• Skylar Byrnes: ?/?/? Talk about sleeping with the enemy, haha. He's just such a hottie, I couldn't help myself. Now I help myself a lot, if you catch my drift. What really gets me is his confidence. Sometime I wonder if we... haha, naw, nevermind.

The way Mr. Marinos took him under his wing, that's something I always wanted. Kind of bums me out sometimes.
• McKenna Marinos: ? Awesome, awesome girl. She's into a lot of the same stuff I am, good energy, waaaaay smart. I get her to help me out sometimes, with homework and stuff.
• Benjamin Hershkovitz: ? Dude is the only one in the school who can keep up with me in a conversation, haha. And we both have crazy love for food. And we both like to throw down. I mean, he smokes, and his face has got plenty of city miles, so I'm not into him that way, but he's probably one of the coolest guys around, aside from yours truly of course, haha.
• Jessica Coleman: ? I don't really know her very well. Seems okay though. Kind of like, one of those crazy drama chicks? Not like, theater drama, but... drama drama. Idunno!

I mean at first I thought he was kind of a dickhole, but we got to know each other some in Battle Strategy, and I like, get the feeling that he was only like that because of where he was.

Like, running into an invisible wall at 150 miles an hour hard. Ouch, haha, I was in the nurse's office for like a week after that one. I love this guy, but like, more like a brother. Wait no, that's weird to say, since we still mess around, haha. Uh. Idunno. He's just awesome.
• Spencer Jerem: ? Cute little dude. Total nerd, but, I dig it. I always feel dumb around him, but that isn't his fault, so... we're cool or whatever, haha.

• Leonardo Marinos: ???/? It?s so clich?, but I?m in love. I?m usually a pitcher, but I?d catch for Leo any day, if you know what I mean. It?s more than that, though. He?s just so amazing, and easily the best man I?ve ever known. Ever since I hit 18, I?ve been thinking about telling him. Just putting myself out there. In the meantime, I help him out every chance I get, especially with these Noctrem people running around. I?ve always been kind of an over-achiever, so it figures that when I fall for an older man, I fall for the oldest man.
• Amalthea Roerig: ? Her class isn?t so bad. I mean, there?s reading, which is ugh, but the talking parts of it I rock at. She?s never, ever made me feel stupid, even on accident. I used to see her a lot when I?d mess up with my powers, but now I only see her in class really.
• Vincent Steele: ?/? His class is the hardest for me out of all of them. I just don?t get that stuff. He knows about my disability, and he can tell right away when I get frustrated, so he?s always really nice about helping me. I?m pretty sure he?s caught me having some pretty? unstudently feelings about him before, haha.
• Cain Montgomery: ?/? He makes me feel really dumb. Like, on purpose. He?s always putting me down. Well you know what? I think I figured him out. He doesn?t even have a power of his own, so it pisses him off, and he takes it out on everyone around him. Those who can?t, teach, right? He is a good teacher though. I have to give him that.
