Saucer 8: "Give it a whirl." - Musical Family Tree

Terre Haute. ?Armpit of the Nation, the one target taken out by Carl Reiner's Nazi in?Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, where the line for Santa stretched back to in A Christmas Story,?home of Third Party candidate Eugene V. Debs (aka Convict #9653) and Larry Bird played ball there . . . a loooooooooong time ago. ?

Also, for a time, back in the early 1990s when flannel-clad, Victor Buono-facial hair sporting grunge-oids moped the Earth, you could find a certain trio at one of the (too) many bars up and down Wabash Avenue (but usually the 4th Quarter), interspersing their originals with impressive (for Terre Haute, or anywhere, really) covers of The Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" and "White Punks on Dope" by The Tubes. ?Taking their name from a (sadly long painted over) bit of graffiti on the 10th Street overpass in Bloomington, they were Saucer 8: Singer/guitarist Seth Scott, bassist Chris Herner, and percussionist Erich Lewis (sp?)

An interview with Herner and Lewis on WISU (then still all-jazz except for Alternative Sunday) revealed their 1980s college radio influences: R.E.M. (Live, Mike Mills' voice seemed to take momentary possession of Herner's throat), The Smiths, as well as The Floyd and others. ?In the frantic live sets, one could also hear traces of The Buzzcocks when Pete Shelley let Steve Diggle sing in that alternate universe where "Just Like Heaven" was a b-side to "What Do I Get?"

They did two proper albums worth of material, the self-titled debut, the Eraserhead referencing second album?Acid Bath, as well as a live compilation, the odds and sods?Rarities and a best-of that finally added Herner's backing vocals to the studio version of "Dee Ann." ?I hope Seth got my e-mail and (if it's cool with all three members) posts some of it here. ?If you heard them, you know just how ahead of their time they were, be it the uber-funky bass intros to "Dee Ann" and "Elephantiger," the military drumming to "She Cries," or the brilliant, brief surrealism of "Kiss the Fish," they were/are great. ?Right down to the 8 that formed the tractor beam in their logo. ?

Anyone else have memories??
