When you are planning a trip to Portugal, look no further than the Gateway to the Algarve, Albufeira. The town is located on the southern coast of Portugal and it is just a short, 45-kilometre trip from the airport at Faro to Albufeira.
When you arrive, you will soon work out there are two parts of the town: the Old Town, which has a history that dates back to the time when the Romans ruled it and called it Baltum; and the newer town, which is popular with tourists and boasts of the best nightlife areas in the region, known by tourists and locals alike as the strip. There are a staggering 25 beaches from which to take your pick. They range from the flat and less populous Praia Salgados beach on the westernmost part of the shore, to the popular tourist beaches, the Praia dos Pescadores, or the Fisherman's beach, and Praia do Tunel, both of which lie off the Old Towns front.
Once you've arrived from Faro to Albufeira and settled in for some serious fun, if you find that you tire of soaking up the sunshine dont worry - there are plenty of activities for you to sink your teeth into too.
Water sports
The beaches that greet you after you arrive from Faro to Albufeira are the perfect place to get your fix of water sports. There are a variety of different opportunities to try new and exciting water sports. From the popular beach Praia da Oura, you can windsurf, ride the banana boats, or go parasailing to check out the view from above. Snorkelling and diving are popular activities, especially around the beaches to the eastern end of the area. As well, you can go out for a speedboat ride or learn to water ski or wakeboard. Or, for those of you who want something a bit tamer, you can rent canoes and kayaks to paddle around the azure waters.
Water parks
For those of you with children, or who just love the excitement of sliding down a waterslide in the warm sunshine, head over to the Acquashow Park. In fact, on your transfer from Faro to Albufeira you may well pass by this park. Part theme park (with a museum, swings, and all sorts of age appropriate activities) and part water park, this is the perfect place to spend a day away from the beach. The water park opens every May and has slides, wave pools, lazy rivers and Acqualand, which is perfect for the younger guests. Acquashow Park also boasts the biggest water coaster in Europe, which towers over the park at an awesome 23.5 metres high! Perfect for a thrill followed by a plunge in the cool waters.
