Tumblr and Instagram remove features following Twitter API changes

Twitter's API overhaul is already coming into effect, as both Tumblr and Instagram have had to kill features that let you find friends from Twitter.

Tumblr's "People you know" page lets you search your contacts for friends with blogs. It used to let you scan your Twitter feed for pals, but it now restricts your search to just Facebook and Gmail.

"To our dismay, Twitter has restricted our users' ability to 'Find Twitter Friends' on Tumblr," a spokesperson for Tumblr said. "We are truly disappointed by Twitter's decision.

"Given our history of embracing their platform, this is especially upsetting. Our syndication feature is responsible for hundreds of millions of tweets, and we eagerly enabled Twitter Cards across 70 million blogs and 30 billion posts as one of Twitter's first partners."

This follows a similar situation on Instagram. Back in July, the photo-filter app had to makes its iPhone app flash up a message that read, "Twitter no longer allows its users to access this information. We apologise for any inconvenience" when you tried to find Twitter friends.

At the time, Twitter released a statement which said, "We understand that there's great value associated with Twitter's follow graph data, and we can confirm that it is no longer available within Instagram."

Business site LinkedIn has also felt the affects. Back in June, head of content products Ryan Roslansky wrote, "Consistent with Twitter's evolving platform efforts, Tweets will no longer be displayed on LinkedIn. "

Twitter has been threatening to enforce a more "consistent user experience" with its API for a while now. In the most recent change -- penned by Michael Sippey, earlier this month -- the service now requires use of the Twitter API to be authenticated, institutes rate limits and makes changes to the ways developers can use Twitter's data.
